The Hague, Netherlands (My Sportsbook) - Danny Buijs scored twice to help Den Haag keep its Eredivisie status for next season by beating Vitesse, 3-1 at Het Zuiderpark on Sunday.
The hosts entered the match ahead of the bottom three on only goal difference, and they were just two points clear of the bottom spot, which would ensure automatic relegation.
However, Buijs eased some nerves around the stadium when he scored 17 minutes into the match, with Karim Soltani making it 2-0 before the break.
Buijs then scored again in the 62nd minute, and although Ricky van Wolfswinkel pulled a goal back with 20 minutes to play for Vitesse, Den Haag's lead was never in serious danger.
While the win keeps Den Haag out of the bottom three, Vitesse's loss means that they miss out on a spot in the Europa League playoffs.
With the prospect of relegation staring them in the face, Den Haag got off to a good start with Mitchell Pique crossing into the box for Bogdan Milic, who laid the ball off for Buijs to smash into the right corner.
Buijs then played provider five minutes later to put his side up two goals as he played a long ball into the path of Soltani, who beat goalkeeper Piet Velthuizen with a right-footed effort.
The Vitesse keeper's net came under more pressure as he saved a shot from Wesley Verhoek with his feet, but he was picking the ball out of his net once more in the 62nd minute.
Lex Immers fired a powerful shot on goal that was parried by Velthuizen, but the ball fell right to Buijs and he finished from a few yards before van Wolfswinkel got a consolation goal for the visitors.
Utrecht was able to hold onto the last Europa League playoff spot as they earned a 1-1 draw with Heracles on a stoppage-time goal from Cedric van der Gun, while Ajax secured a third-place finish by beating Twente 1-0 on a goal from Urby Emanuelson.
PSV Eindhoven finished fourth after they won 3-0 at Willem II, champions AZ Alkmaar closed out their campaign in successful fashion by beating Heerenveen 3-1 while Andreas Granqvist scored the lone goal in Groningen's 1-0 victory over NAC and Sparta earned a 1-1 draw at NEC.
Volendam will be headed back down to the second division after they were held to a 2-2 draw at Graafschap, which will face Roda in a relegation playoff. Roda entered the day on the bottom of the table but they escaped automatic relegation with a 3-2 win at Feyenoord.
