Hamburg, Germany (My Sportsbook) - Claudio Pizarro and Frank Baumann scored in the second half and Werder Bremen edged Hamburg, 3-2, at HSH Nordbank Arena on Thursday to tie the UEFA Cup semifinal series at 3 and advance on away goals.
Hamburg won the first leg at Bremen, 1-0, and took the early lead in the second leg, but Diego scored the first of three unanswered Bremen goals midway through the first half and the visiting side held on to reach the last UEFA Cup final.
Bremen started its European season in the Champions League, but finished third in the group stage and dropped into the UEFA Cup - which will be renamed Europa League next season.
Werder has struggled in the Bundesliga and its six-season run of playing in the Champions League will end next season. However, the German side - which is 10th in the Bundesliga - salvaged its season against Hamburg. Ivica Olic scored both goals for Hamburg, the first in the 12th minute and the second in the 87th.
In the other semifinal, Shakhtar Donetsk beat Ukrainian rival Dynamo Kyiv, 2-1, to advance to the final on aggregate, 3-2. Werder will play Shakhtar on May 20, in Istanbul, Turkey.
Werder Bremen had a chance to level its series with German rival Hamburg in the 12th minute, but Pizarro wasted an open header by directing the ball straight down, and it took a hop over the bar.
Hamburg took advantage of the missed chance and scored on the ensuing counter. The home side threaded a pass through to Olic in the middle of the field, and he chipped over onrushing Bremen goalie Tim Wiese in the 12th.
Olic had another chance in the 27th, but Wiese was off his line quicker to get in front of the shot and made a save.
Bremen rewarded Wiese for his effort two minutes later when Diego leveled the match and gave Werder a shot to win the series.
Pizarro held the ball in the middle of the field and drew a few defenders to open space for a streaking Diego. Pizarro slipped a pass through traffic, and Diego chipped over an onrushing Hamburg goalie Frank Rost from 12 yards.
Diego nearly added the series-tying goal before half, but his blast in the 37th was tipped off the crossbar by Rost.
Bremen suffered a big blow minutes later, though, when Diego picked up a yellow card - meaning he will miss the final.
Werder wasn't focused on Diego's fate, however, and Pizarro - after having a goal erased for being about an inch offside - added his 27th goal in all events this season in the 66th minute.
Pizarro picked up the ball just inside midfield and, with his back to the goal, made a turn to his left and quickly found open space. He unleashed a shot from 25-30 yards that dipped just in front of Rost, deflected off his fingertips and rolled into the bottom-right corner.
Pizarro's goal was enough to put Bremen through to the final on away goals, but Werder captain Baumann made sure his side would advance. Off a corner kick from Diego, Hugo Almeida headed the ball at the near post, it deflected off Rost's hands, then was nearly cleared by Hamburg's Joris Mathijsen but Baumann lowered his head into the clearance to redirect the ball into the net in the 83rd.
Olic leveled the aggregate in the 87th, holding off a defender to head into the right side past a helpless Wiese, but Hamburg still needed another goal in the closing minutes to advance.
Hamburg striker Mladen Petric nearly delivered the winner on a bicycle kick but his effort was sent wide of the right post in the 91st. Hamburg had one final chance on a corner kick in the closing seconds but, even with Rost in the box, couldn't score.
In Donetsk, Ukraine, Ilsinho scored the match-winner in the 89th minute to help Shakhtar Donetsk finish off rival Dynamo Kyiv at RSK Olympyiskyi.
After a 1-all first leg, Rodrigues Jadson handed Shakhtar the series lead with a goal in the 17th minute of the second leg. Dynamo 's Ismael Bangoura answered in the 47th, but Shakhtar advanced on the late match- and series-winner.
Ilsinho latched onto a pass from Willian on the right side, then took the ball into the area. With a pair of Dynamo defenders closing in on him, Ilsinho faked a shot and quickly cut back to the left. He then unleashed a left-footed shot - just before two more Dynamo players closed in - and hit the lower-left corner.
