Amsterdam, Netherlands (My Sportsbook) - Marco Van Basten resigned as Ajax manager on Wednesday after his team failed to qualify for the Champions League next season. Van Basten's side lost 4-0 to Sparta on Sunday, which leaves them in third place behind champions AZ Alkmaar and second-placed Twente. Ajax will instead have to settle for a spot in the Europa League playoffs, and they will finish out their season on Sunday at home against Twente under the guidance of assistant coach John van't Schip. "It was a tough decision which had a lot to do with the results of the last matches but also the whole season," Van Basten said at a news conference. Not only has Ajax failed to achieve a top-two finish, but they also made an early exit in the Dutch Cup as well as being knocked out of the UEFA Cup by Marseille in the round of 16. The legendary Dutch striker joined Ajax in July 2008 after a four-year spell as Netherlands coach.
