(My Sportsbook) - The
Toronto Blue Jays take aim at a season-high fourth straight win this evening, when they open a brief two-game series against the
Cleveland Indians at Rogers Centre.
After dealing with their first losing streak of the 2009 season, the Blue Jays responded by sweeping the Baltimore Orioles over the weekend. On Sunday, the American League East-leading Jays finished off the trifecta, as Alex Rios' solo home run in the bottom of the fifth inning proved to be the difference in their 4-3 win.
Vernon Wells clubbed a two-run homer and Rod Barajas added an RBI double for the Blue Jays, who have won four of their last six games. Wells has hit safely in his last six contests.
Scott Richmond (4-0) was efficient on the mound for Toronto, allowing three runs -- two earned -- on five hits and striking out six in a solid seven- inning start. Jesse Carlson hurled a perfect eighth and Scott Downs tossed a 1-2-3 ninth for his third save.
Heading to the hill for the Jays tonight will be left-hander Brian Tallet, who is coming off a horrific outing Wednesday in Kansas City. Tallet was pounded for 10 runs and 11 hits in four innings of that one, dropping him to 1-1, while ballooning his earned run average more than three runs to 6.45.
Tallet has faced the Indians seven times in his career out of the bullpen without recording a decision.
Cleveland, meanwhile, will counter with righty Fausto Carmona, who is 1-3 with a 6.28 ERA. Carmona did not get a decision Wednesday against Boston, as he allowed two runs and five hits in 6 2/3 innings of his team's 6-5 loss.
Carmona has beaten the Jays both times he has faced them, while allowing just three runs in 14 1/3 innings.
Cleveland enters this series on the heels of dropping two of three over the weekend to the Detroit Tigers, including a 3-1 setback in Sunday's rubber match.
Victor Martinez extended his hitting streak to 12 games, while Asdrubal Cabrera went 1-for-4 and had the lone RBI for the Indians, who had alternated wins and losses in their previous seven games.
Cliff Lee (1-4) lasted seven innings for Cleveland, allowing three runs on 12 hits to take the loss. He walked one and struck out four.
Toronto took two of three from the Indians earlier in the season, but Cleveland has won seven of the last 10 meetings in the series.
