(My Sportsbook) - Though the
San Francisco Giants have yet to lose a home series this season, they haven't been able to carry that success with them on the road. The team visits the
Chicago Cubs and Wrigley Field tonight for the opener of a quick two-game set.
Including a two-game sweep of San Diego in mid-April, the Giants have yet to lose any of their five home series this year and are 10-4 at home after Sunday's 1-0, 10-inning victory versus Colorado. However, San Francisco is just 2-7 on the road and was swept in its first two away series in 2009 before winning two of three in Arizona from April 24-26.
In Sunday's rubber match with the Rockies, Rich Aurilia stroked an RBI single in the bottom of the 10th off Manuel Corpas (0-3) to plate Steve Holm for the winning run. Fred Lewis and Emmanuel Burriss each had two hits in the victory.
San Francisco's Barry Zito was spectacular in a seven-inning start, allowing just two hits with four strikeouts and one walk. Brandon Medders (1-1) tossed a scoreless top of the 10th to collect the win for the Giants.
The Giants send Jonathan Sanchez to the hill tonight for his first career start versus the Cubs. He has faced them once in relief, tossing a shutout inning.
The left-hander made a relief appearance on April 25 after making two starts, then returned to the rotation to face Los Angeles on Tuesday. Sanchez got a no-decision on that day despite allowing just two unearned runs on three hits and three walks over five innings of a 5-3 setback.
He is 1-1 with a 2.60 earned run average in four games this year.
Ryan Dempster goes for the Cubs tonight and had been 1-0 over his first four starts to the year before a loss in Arizona on Wednesday. He gave up five runs on six hits and six innings in that one.
Dempster is 2-7 with four saves and a 4.45 ERA in 19 games (9 starts) versus the Giants, while going 0-1 in two starts against them last year.
The righty has made just one home start this year, getting a no-decision versus St. Louis on April 18 after a four-run, six-inning start. He went 14-3 with a 2.86 ERA in 20 Wrigley Field outings last season.
He was a big part of Chicago's NL-best 55-26 mark at home in 2008, and the Cubs are 7-5 so far this year as the host. The Cubs dropped the opener of a four-game home set with Florida on Thursday, but then ran off three straight wins culminating with a 6-4 victory on Sunday.
Derrek Lee hit a grand slam in the fifth inning and Mike Fontenot turned in a two-hit effort with a solo homer for the Cubs. Aaron Miles chipped in an RBI double in the victory, the Cubs' fourth in six games.
Carlos Zambrano (3-1) earned the win despite leaving the game in the fifth inning with a strained left hamstring after legging out a bunt single. The right-hander worked five innings, allowing two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and a walk. Kevin Gregg picked up his third save of the season after pitching a scoreless ninth inning.
Aramis Ramirez hasn't started any of Chicago's last nine games -- although he did pinch-hit once in that span -- but could return to the starting lineup tonight. He is hitting .352 on the year with three homers and 14 RBI.
The Cubs are 9-5 versus the Giants since the start of the 2007 season, going 5-2 at home in that span.
