St. Petersburg, FL (My Sportsbook) - Carl Crawford went 4-for-4 with an RBI, two runs scored and tied a modern day major league record with six stolen bases, as the Tampa Bay Rays edged the Boston Red Sox, 5-3, taking three of the four games in the series at Tropicana Field.

Crawford joins Eddie Collins, Otis Nixon and Eric Young, who also had six steals in a game. The Rays set a franchise record with eight stolen bases in the win.

Jason Bartlett finished with three hits and an RBI, while Carlos Pena added a run-scoring double for the Rays, who split their last six overall.

James Shields (3-2) grabbed the win after pitching 7 1/3 innings. The right- hander allowed two runs on six hits, while striking out six and walking two. Troy Percival earned his third save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

"He has a tendency in almost every game that he pitches to have one inning that is a little more difficult than others and it happened to be the first," Rays manager Joe Maddon said about Shields. "After he went out in the second I thought he looked pretty good. I liked the pace on his changeup today a lot. I thought he was in command of his fastball strike wise, getting some first- pitch outs on fastballs."

Kevin Youkilis had a pair of hits, including a two-run homer for Boston, which has dropped four of six since winning its previous 11 games. J.D. Drew turned in a three-hit effort with an RBI in defeat.

Brad Penny (2-1) took the loss, but pitched six effective innings, giving up three runs on six hits with eight strikeouts and a pair of walks.

Boston jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. With the bases loaded and one out, Drew's single to right plated Dustin Pedroia, who got things started with a base hit. However, a Pena RBI double in the home half of the frame tied the game.

Ben Zobrist walked with one down in the bottom of the fourth and Akinori Iwamura hit a bloop double to right, putting runners on second and third. Bartlett's broken bat single to left allowed Zobrist to cross the plate, before Michel Hernandez grounded into a force out that scored another to give the Rays a 3-1 lead.

In the home half of the seventh, Manny Delcarmen took over on the mound for the Red Sox, but struggled mightily. The right-hander gave up a one-out base hit to Crawford, who promptly stole second for his fifth steal of the game. Evan Longoria followed with a single and Delcarmen hit Pena and Pat Burrell, the later forcing in a run to make it 4-1.

Hunter Jones then replaced Delcarmen and retired the next two batters to prevent further damage. Youkilis' two-run homer to center in the top of the eighth drew the Red Sox to within a run.

The Rays got an insurance run in the home half of the eighth. Bartlett started the frame with a single, took second on a sacrifice bunt by Hernandez and stole third after B.J. Upton popped out. Crawford's RBI infield base-hit gave Tampa a two-run cushion. He then swiped second for his sixth steal of the contest.

In the top of the ninth, Percival came in and retired the side in order to preserve the win.

Game Notes
