(My Sportsbook) - Steady lefty Wandy Rodriguez hopes for better luck than he's had thus far in 2009 when his
Houston Astros wrap up a three-game series with the
Atlanta Braves today at Turner Field.
Holder of an earned run average below 2.00 in spite of winning just twice in five starts, Rodriguez enters today's assignment third in the National League in that category after going 9-7 with a 3.54 mark last season.
He downed Cincinnati, 8-3, on Tuesday in his last start, giving up five hits and a run in seven innings.
Overall, in five starts and 32 innings pitched this season, Rodriguez has allowed only 21 hits and six earned runs, while having walked 12 and struck out 27.
He was 1-0 in two starts against the Braves in 2008, giving up 11 hits and three earned runs in 12 1/3 innings.
Meanwhile, California-born lefty Jo-Jo Reyes makes his third start since returning to the majors last month for the Braves today.
A winner in five of 34 major league appearances over 2007 and 2008, Reyes was optioned to Gwinnett of the Triple-A International League on March 26, but was recalled in mid-April when pitcher Blaine Boyer was designated for assignment.
Reyes was tagged for seven hits and five runs in 5 2/3 innings of his season debut on April 18 at Pittsburgh, then bounced back for a quality no-decision against St. Louis on Tuesday. He allowed three hits and a run in seven innings of a 2-1 Atlanta win.
He is 1-1 lifetime in three starts against Houston, having posted a 6.43 ERA in 14 innings.
On Saturday, Lance Berkman hit a solo home run to help the Astros take a 5-1 win over the Braves and even this series.
Hunter Pence went 3-for-4 with a run scored and Ivan Rodriguez had two hits, scored once and drove in a run for the Astros, who have won four of their last six games.
Roy Oswalt started on the mound for Houston, but pitched only one inning due to a lengthy rain delay. He walked a batter and struck out two. Tim Byrdak (1-0) got the win after throwing 2 1/3 scoreless innings.
Jeff Francoeur scored the lone Atlanta run while Jordan Schafer and Kelly Johnson each had two hits for the Braves, who have dropped four of their past six games.
Braves starter Jair Jurrjens gave up one run on four hits in two innings before being removed due to the delay. Buddy Carlyle (0-1) came on afterward and took the loss after yielding three runs -- one earned -- on four hits in three innings.
The Astros hold a slim 11-10 edge in this series since the start of the 2006 season, but the Braves are 7-4 against Houston at Turner Field over that span.
