(My Sportsbook) - The
Baltimore Orioles will try to snap out of their recent funk when they battle the
Toronto Blue Jays this afternoon in the finale of a three-game set at Rogers Centre.
On Saturday the Orioles fell to the Blue Jays, 5-4, in a thrilling 11-inning battle. It was the fifth consecutive setback for Baltimore and the team's eighth loss in its last 10 matchups. Adam Jones was 3-for-6 with a home run and Aubrey Huff had two RBI for the slumping Orioles, while Nick Markakis finished 0-for-4 with two walks and two runs scored but had a 17-game hitting streak snapped.
Brad Bergesen got the start for Baltimore and gave up three runs on six hits in six innings of work. Brian Bass (0-1) was saddled with the loss after giving up the deciding run in the 11th.
The hero for the Blue Jays was Aaron Hill, who tied the game in the 10th with a solo homer and drove in the winning run in the bottom of the 11th.
Marco Scutaro, Adam Lind and Raul Chavez each drove in runs for the Blue Jays, who have won three of their last five games. Toronto's Robert Ray recorded a no decision in his major league debut, allowing three runs on four hits over 5 2/3 innings. Jason Frasor (4-0) earned the win after hurling a scoreless frame in relief.
If the O's are going to climb back into the win column today, they will need a superb performance from starting pitcher Jeremy Guthrie. However, Guthrie enters this game on a down note, having gone 0-1 over his last three starts.
The last time Guthrie was in action, the right-hander allowed three runs on six hits in five innings against Texas on Monday. The Orioles eventually lost by a 6-4 margin, but Guthrie did not factor in the decision.
Guthrie is only 1-2 in seven starts against the Blue Jays, but the 30-year-old has mustered a respectable 3.09 earned run average in those outings.
The Blue Jays will turn to the red-hot Scott Richmond, who is riding a personal three-game winning streak. Richmond is coming off a tremendous effort against Kansas City on Tuesday in which the right-hander held the Royals to just one run on five hits in seven innings. Richmond walked three batters in the win, but also struck out five.
The 29-year-old has made one previous start against the O's and was outstanding, holding Baltimore scoreless in six innings while scattering four hits last September.
Dating back to the beginning of last season, the Blue Jays have posted a 14-6 record against Baltimore, including an 8-3 mark at the Rogers Centre.
