Phillies get bases-loaded walk, top Mets in 10 innings

Philadelphia, PA (My Sportsbook) - Sean Green walked Shane Victorino to force in the winning run in the bottom of the 10th inning, as the Philadelphia Phillies edged New York, 6-5, in the second of three games with the Mets.

Green (0-2) started the 10th for the Mets, replacing J.J. Putz, who had thrown two scoreless frames. He started well, getting leadoff hitter Jimmy Rollins to ground out.

But Pedro Feliz reached base after tapping a slow roller to third, and Green hit pinch-hitter Matt Stairs before pinch-hitter Greg Dobbs flied out. Pinch- hitter Chris Coste walked to load the bases, and Victorino worked a full count before Green threw the sixth pitch of the at-bat low for ball four, forcing in Feliz to end the game.

Jack Taschner (1-0) took the win after holding the Mets scoreless in the top of the 10th. New York rallied to put men on first and third with one out against Taschner, but Carlos Beltran hit into an inning-ending double play to leave the contest tied.

Raul Ibanez had two hits, including a game-tying solo homer in the sixth inning for the Phillies, who halted a two-game slide. Philadelphia dropped the opener of this series, 7-4, on Friday.

In addition to working the game-winning walk, Victorino doubled and tripled.

"We battled, they battled and fortunately for us, we won," Ibanez said.

Daniel Murphy and Ramon Castro hit back-to-back homers in the sixth inning for the Mets, who have lost three of four overall.

Neither team's starter factored into the decision. The Mets' Oliver Perez allowed four runs on five hits and six walks, and was pulled after just 2 1/3 innings. Philadelphia's Jamie Moyer gave up five runs on seven hits and four walks in 5 2/3 frames.

Perez and Moyer struggled early, as the teams traded runs in the opening innings.

The Phillies got to Perez immediately, as Victorino opened the bottom half of the first with a triple, then scored on Ibanez's sacrifice fly. Jayson Werth walked, then went to third on a Ryan Howard single, and a Rollins base hit chased home Werth for a 2-0 lead.

Philadelphia later loaded the bases with two outs, but Perez got Carlos Ruiz to pop up to end the threat.

The Mets got a run in the second inning, on a two-out sac fly from Murphy. But after also loading the bases, Moyer got Jose Reyes to pop out to escape the jam.

Philadelphia added another run in the bottom of the second. Victorino doubled with one down, then scored after Werth's drive to center dropped behind a twisted-around Beltran for a double.

The Mets got within 3-2 in the third, as David Wright hit a sac fly in foul territory down the first base line.

But Perez's spotty control stole the momentum away from the Mets, as he walked the bases loaded before forcing a run home with a walk of Moyer.

He was pulled in favor of Ken Takahashi, a 30-year-old rookie who made his major league debut. His first batter, Victorino, smacked a liner back to the mound and Takahashi went home for the force out. Castro then turned the unusual double-play by throwing to Reyes for the tag out of Moyer, who had fallen on the basepath.

Takahashi was effective for 2 2/3 innings, as he allowed only one hit and one walk.

Back-to-back solo shots from Murphy and Castro in the sixth quickly knotted the score at 4-4. Pinch-hitter Alex Cora followed with a triple, ending Moyer's day. Scott Eyre came on in relief, but did not record an out. Instead, he walked Reyes and gave up a run-scoring single to Luis Castillo before hitting Beltran. Eyre was quickly pulled for Clay Condrey, who got Gary Sheffield to hit an inning-ending groundout.

Ibanez erased the Mets' brief lead when he drilled a Pedro Feliciano pitch deep to right for his eighth homer of the season.

It was a battle of the bullpens from that point on. The Mets had a chance to go back in front in the eighth inning against Ryan Madson, when they had two on and two out. Beltran singled to right field, but Werth threw a dart home to catch Omir Santos at the plate, ending the threat.
