Lilly's arm and bat lift Cubs past Marlins

Chicago, IL (My Sportsbook) - Ted Lilly struck out 10 in eight strong innings and doubled home a pair of runs, as the Chicago Cubs built a substantial lead early and went on to defeat the Florida Marlins, 6-1.

Lilly (3-2) allowed only one run on five hits without walking a batter for the Cubs, who have inched one game above .500 with two consecutive wins over Florida. With the victory, Lilly has now defeated all 30 MLB teams, having previously been 0-4 against the Marlins.

Ryan Theriot homered for the second straight game and added a triple, while Derrek Lee also went deep for Chicago. Micah Hoffpauir and Alfonso Soriano both had a pair of hits and scored once in the victory.

Cody Ross' solo homer was the only offense for the Marlins, who have lost nine of their last 12 after starting the season 11-1.

Florida starter Anibal Sanchez (1-3) was tagged for six runs on nine hits and four walks in four innings, with five strikeouts, to absorb the loss. No Marlins starter has recorded a victory in 15 consecutive games, dating back to April 16, when Sanchez defeated the Braves.

Chicago struck for three runs in the first. Soriano singled to start the game and scored as Theriot blasted his second home run of the season.

Kosuke Fukudome followed with a walk and stole second before scoring on Mike Fontenot's two-out single to center.

Lilly helped his own cause in the third. Hoffpauir led off with a single and moved to second on a Fontenot walk. Geovany Soto grounded into a double play, and Aaron Miles was intentionally walked so Sanchez could pitch to Lilly. But the strategy didn't pay off, as Lilly doubled to right field to score both runners and extend the lead to 5-0.

Lee's solo homer in the fourth gave the Cubs a six-run advantage.

Ross' one-out solo shot in the fifth finally got the Marlins on the board, but Lilly settled down and retired 11 of the next 13 batters to get through the eighth inning without yielding another run.

Aaron Heilman pitched a scoreless ninth to finish the game for Chicago.

Game Notes

The Cubs retired No. 31 in honor of legendary pitchers Fergie Jenkins and Greg Maddux. Jenkins won the Cy Young Award with Chicago in 1971, while Maddux is the Cubs' most recent award winner in 1992...Lilly's 35 wins are second among MLB lefties since 2007 (CC Sabathia, 37)...Hanley Ramirez returned to the starting lineup for the Marlins after being relegated to the bench for four games with a bruised right wrist. He went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts..The Cubs are 12-1 when scoring four or more runs and 0-10 when scoring three or less...Chicago is 10-6 against clubs with a winning record and 2-5 against teams with a mark under .500.
