(My Sportsbook) - The Tampa Bay Rays will try to continue their recent dominance over the
Boston Red Sox when the two teams meet again this evening in the third tilt of a four-game set at Tropicana Field.
The Rays grabbed their fourth win in five tries against Boston this season on Friday, thanks in large part to Evan Longoria. The 2008 American League Rookie of the Year hit a grand slam as part of a six-run fifth inning as the Rays defeated Boston, 6-2. Longoria now has four homers and 13 RBI in five games against Boston this year.
Carlos Pena added a solo homer and B. J. Upton knocked in another run with a sacrifice fly for the Rays, who were able to build off an impressive 13-0 victory over the Red Sox on Thursday. After dropping their season opener against Boston, the Rays have collected four consecutive wins against the Sox.
Andy Sonnanstine (1-3) claimed the win after giving up two runs on eight hits in 5 2/3 innings. The right-hander walked four and struck out one.
J.D. Drew and Jason Bay drove in Boston's runs, while Kevin Youkilis finished with a pair of doubles in the loss. The Red Sox have dropped three of four after winning their previous 11 contests.
Justin Masterson (2-1) took the loss after being touched for six runs on as many hits, while compiling six strikeouts and three walks over six frames.
Looking to keep the Rays on the winning side of this rivalry will be Jeff Niemann, who after losing his first two starts of the season has rebounded with back-to-back victories.
Despite some minor control problems (4 walks), the right-hander held Minnesota to just one run on three hits and struck out four batters in 5 2/3 innings of duty Monday in his last start.
This will be Niemann's first career showdown against Boston.
The Red Sox will turn to the always-reliable Tim Wakefield this evening, as the knuckleballer will try to help Boston snap its two-game slide. Wakefield is coming off an outstanding showing on Monday, in which he held Cleveland scoreless in seven innings of work. Although the right-hander only allowed one hit and struck out five batters, he did not factor in the decision.
Wakefield will be making his 42nd appearance and 32nd start against the Rays, and throughout the years the veteran has enjoyed tremendous success when facing Tampa, having posted a 19-5 mark with a 3.32 earned run average in this series.
Since the beginning of last season, the Rays have collected a solid 14-9 mark against Boston during the regular season. Tampa Bay also edged the Red Sox in seven games during last October's AL Championship Series to claim its first- ever pennant.
