(My Sportsbook) - Aaron Laffey will try to grab his third consecutive victory this afternoon, when he takes the hill for the
Cleveland Indians in the second meeting of a three-game set with the
Detroit Tigers at Comerica Park.
Laffey, who is making his fourth start on the year, is coming off an solid showing against Minnesota last Sunday, as the southpaw allowed just two runs on five hits in 6 1/3 innings of duty. Laffey did walk four batters in the win and in 18 2/3 innings this year, the young hurler has issued 10 walks against only nine strikeouts.
The 24-year-old has only made one career start against the Tigers and it was a solid one, as the kid from Cumberland, Maryland held Detroit to just two runs in 6 2/3 innings of work at Comerica Park last June. He wound up with a no decision, however, in an eventual 8-4 Cleveland loss.
Laffey's counterpart this afternoon will be Zach Miner, who is coming off a solid showing against the Kansas City Royals on April 25. Miner grabbed his second win on the year in his last start, as the right-hander held the Royals to just one run in five innings.
Miner has faced the Indians nine times in his career, but this will be the first-ever start for the 27-year-old against the Tribe. Miner has collected a 1-1 mark versus Cleveland, but in just 14 1/3 innings of duty, the right- hander has surrendered eight runs on 18 hits and eight walks.
In Friday's series opener, Carl Pavano pitched into the eighth inning and the Cleveland bullpen held on to help the Indians top the Tigers, 6-5.
Pavano (1-3) entered the game with a 9.50 earned run average in four starts this season, but picked up his first victory after giving up two runs on five hits in 7 1/3 frames.
Both Pavano's allowed runs came in Detroit's five-run eighth inning. Rafael Perez and Jensen Lewis followed Pavano and nearly blew Cleveland's lead before Rafael Betancourt secured the final out of the frame. Kerry Wood then threw a scoreless ninth to pick up his fifth save of the season.
Jhonny Peralta finished 2-for-5 with a solo homer and two runs batted in for the Indians, who had lost two of three to Boston in their last series.
David Dellucci had four hits in his first game of the season for Cleveland. He was activated from the 15-day disabled list prior to the contest, having missed time because of a strained left calf.
Armando Galarraga (3-1) took the loss after giving up five runs on eight hits and three walks in five innings, as the Tigers were dealt their third consecutive defeat.
Miguel Cabrera led the Detroit offense with two hits, including a three-run homer in the eighth inning.
Cleveland won 11 of its 18 matchups with the Tigers last season and is 13-7 in its 20 most recent visits to Motown.
