Montreal, QC (My Sportsbook) - Former Montreal Canadiens forward Guy Lafleur was convicted of obstruction of justice Friday and faces a maximum sentence of 14 years in prison. Lafleur's son, Mark, violated his bail conditions when he stayed at a hotel, and the hockey legend gave contradictory evidence at the subsequent hearing. His lawyer, Jean-Pierre Rancourt, is asking the court to levy only a fine and bypass any jail time. "The judge has discretion completely to decide to give him a fine, which I asked this morning," Rancourt said. "So I will have to read carefully the decision before we make the decision if we are going to appeal. It's very sad, the judgment this morning. He believed what he did was not in the purpose to mislead the court, but the judge didn't buy it." Sentencing is scheduled for June 8. The 58-year-old Lafleur spent 14 of his 17 NHL seasons with the Canadiens, winning five Stanley Cup titles with Montreal. In his career, which included stints with the Rangers and Nordiques, he compiled 560 points, 793 assists and a plus-minus rating of plus-453. Lafleur was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1988.
