(My Sportsbook) - Evan Longoria has done his part to ensure that the Rays-Red Sox rivalry tilts in his club's favor. Tampa Bay will try to defeat Boston for a fourth straight game this evening in the second contest of a four-game series between the clubs at Tropicana Field.
In just his second season in the majors, Longoria is a career .309 batter in 19 games versus the Red Sox. In four games this year, he is hitting .474 (9- for-19) against them with three homers and nine runs batted in, helping Tampa Bay win three of those contests.
Longoria had three hits -- one a solo homer -- four RBI and three runs scored in Thursday night's 13-0 win over Boston, backing a near flawless outing from starter Matt Garza. Garza (2-2) allowed just a hit and one walk while striking out 10 in 7 2/3 innings, and carried a perfect game into the seventh inning.
Michel Hernandez added four hits, including a solo home run, and three RBI in the victory that saw every Rays starter post at least one hit and a run scored. Tampa, which had lost four of five heading into the contest, ended with 18 hits in all.
The Rays, who won two of three in Boston from April 7-9, won 10 of 18 versus the Red Sox last year and claimed a victory in eight of nine at home. Tampa Bay then battled the Red Sox in the ALCS and ultimately won Game 7 at home to complete its worst-to-first run that ended with a loss to Philadelphia in the World Series.
Jacoby Ellsbury had the lone hit and David Ortiz and Julio Lugo each drew a walk for the Red Sox, who have dropped two of three on the heels of an 11-game winning streak. Josh Beckett (2-2) was clobbered for seven runs on 10 hits with three walks and eight strikeouts in 4 2/3 innings of work.
Justin Masterson will hope for better results when he takes the hill tonight for Boston. Masterson has made two starts in place of the injured Daisuke Matsuzaka and won both, going 5 1/3 innings and allowing just one run in each outing. That includes a win over the rival Yankees on Sunday.
The right-hander has faced the Rays twice in relief this year and has allowed just a hit over one inning of work. Masterson is 1-2 with a 5.28 earned run average in six games (2 starts) lifetime versus Tampa Bay, but is 0-2 with a 7.11 ERA at Tropicana Field.
The Rays counter with Andy Sonnanstine, who is 0-3 with a 7.78 ERA in four starts this year. He is coming off his worst outing of the season, a matchup with Oakland on Sunday in which he allowed season highs of seven runs and 10 hits while lasting a season-low four innings.
The righty is 1-1 with a 5.40 ERA in six career regular-season games against the Red Sox, but bested them in Game 4 of last year's ALCS with 7 1/3 solid innings.
