Philadelphia, PA (My Sportsbook) - An NFL blog guy announced today that the NFL was dangerously short of professional-quality quarterbacks for the upcoming season "owing to the sucky nature of quarterback talent in this country. And you just wait, I'll blog about it too," he concluded.
The announcement came as the NFL blog guy, Matt Raymond Shapiro, waited for the Number 2 train at New York City's Fulton Street station and drank his second Red Bull for the day.
Sources say that last week's NFL players draft only served to highlight the generally poor quality of quarterbacks in the NFL, further frustrating Shapiro, a long-time Jets fan.
Unproven rookie USC quarterback Mark Sanchez, who had only 16 starts at USC, was picked fifth overall by the Jets to replace temporarily retired quarterback Brett Favre.
Shapiro, who maintains his blog in the back of the used computer store he owns with several brothers near the Gunhill Road station, followed up by giggling "Is sucky even a word?" just as the doors to the Number 2 train closed after him.
While no plans have been finalized yet to deal with the quarterback shortage, the NFL blog guy believes that federal authorities are closely monitoring the situation and will intervene if necessary.
Shapiro also believes in the Trilateral Commission, UFOs and the Ron Paul Revolution (responsible authorities please note that I DO NOT believe in ANY of these).
"You see in this country, we got a lot of wide receiver talent. And don't get me started about running backs," Shapiro explained subsequently on his blog MyPetJets.com.
"We got running backs coming out the ying-yang. But quarterbacks? There's just not enough heart left in the country to supply the big arms and the nerve that quarterbacks need."
Indeed statistics seem to indicate that while Shapiro could be adjudged legally insane over several of his peculiar personal behaviors, including dressing his two cats, Izzo and Martin, in tiny Jets costumes, on the quarterback issue he might have a point.
In last week's draft only 11 quarterbacks were drafted versus 35 wide receivers and 19 running backs out of a total draft class of 256 players.
"Even tight ends get more action than quarterbacks in the draft," says Shapiro
"You'd think that if they were so important that you might draft more than 11 of 'em."
One would think.
Shapiro, aged 38, last year blogged extensively about the trade that brought Brett Favre to the Jets, writing on MyPetJets: "Picking up Favre will go down as the greatest trade in the history of the NFL. Go Mangini!!"
He subsequently revised his opinion after the Jets' Week 14 loss against the San Francisco 49ers when Favre went 20-for-31 for 137 yards with one interception and zero touchdowns.
"Well at least we can count on running back Thomas Jones to be loyal," wrote Shapiro at the time.
"Maybe we should have kept Chad Pennington around? After all," he concluded, "there aren't that many good quarterbacks in the NFL are there?"
Oh, yes.
Even a blogger knows that.
