(My Sportsbook) - The
San Francisco Giants and
Colorado Rockies each got their 2009 campaigns off to slow starts, but both teams have been showing signs of breaking out as of late.
The two National League West foes aim to continue their good recent stretches when they square off tonight at AT&T Park in the opener of a three-game weekend series.
San Francisco lost seven of its first nine contests to start to season, but the team has gone 7-2 over its nine games to climb back to the .500 mark. Most of the Giants' success has come at home, where the club improved to 8-3 on the year with Wednesday's 9-4 victory over the rival Los Angeles Dodgers.
Bengie Molina led a 15-hit San Francisco attack by going 3-for-5 with a homer and four RBI, while Edgar Renteria had four hits and knocked in a pair of runs to back seven solid innings out of Tim Lincecum.
Lincecum (2-1) allowed three runs on six hits and struck out eight Dodgers to win his second straight start, with Brian Wilson recording the final four outs to notch his fifth save of the season.
Colorado is also on a bit of a roll at the moment, as the Rockies enter this five-game road trip having won three of their last four matchups. The team was last in action on Wednesday, when it survived a late San Diego comeback bid to post a 7-5 victory over the Padres at Coors Field.
Both Todd Helton and Chris Iannetta homered and drove in three runs to pace Colorado's offense, while Aaron Cook worked seven innings to record his first win of the season.
Cook (1-1) held the Padres scoreless over the first six frames before surrendering three runs in the seventh. Matt Belisle gave up a two-run homer to San Diego's Adrian Gonzalez in the eighth that cut the Rockies' lead to 7-5, but Huston Street came on to strike out the side in the ninth to preserve the win.
Colorado will take its swings tonight against Randy Johnson, with the future Hall of Famer shooting for the 297th victory of his decorated career.
Johnson's first season in San Francisco hasn't gone overly well so far, as the 45-year-old is 1-2 with a subpar 6.16 earned run average through his first four starts. The towering left-hander lasted just 3 2/3 innings in his last appearance, a no decision at Arizona on Saturday in which he surrendered a pair of runs and issued a whopping seven walks.
The five-time Cy Young Award winner's performance came just six days after he dominated the Diamondbacks at AT&T Park. Johnson took a no-hitter into the seventh inning of that 2-0 Giants' win and yielded just one hit while fanning seven over seven frames.
Johnson won all three of his 2008 starts against Colorado and has historically mastered the Rockies, having amassed an 18-7 record and an excellent 2.31 ERA over 27 overall appearances versus tonight's opponent.
Colorado will hand the ball to youngster Ubaldo Jimenez, who has delivered three straight poor starts following a standout effort in his 2009 debut.
Jimenez twirled seven shutout innings to defeat Arizona on April 7, but the talented Dominican hasn't lasted more than 4 1/3 frames in any of his three mound trips since that win. During that span, he has allowed 16 runs and walked 14 batters in just 12 innings of work.
The 25-year-old was reached for six runs on eight hits in only four innings of a home loss to the Dodgers last Saturday, six days after serving up seven runs in 4 1/3 innings against Los Angeles at Dodger Stadium.
Jimenez has faced the Giants five times previously and owns a 1-1 record with a 2.37 ERA lifetime against them. He went 1-0 with a sparkling 1.78 ERA in four starts versus San Francisco last season, limiting the Giants to a .159 batting average during that impressive stretch.
Colorado went 11-7 against the Giants in last year's season series and won six of the nine meetings between the teams held in San Francisco.
