Chicago, IL (My Sportsbook) - Jorge Cantu stroked a three-run double to highlight a six-run 10th inning, helping the
Florida Marlins to an 8-2 win over the
Chicago Cubs in the opener of a four-game series.
Cantu finished with four RBI and the Marlins took advantage of an error from shortstop Ryan Theriot in the 10th to win their third in a row after a seven- game skid.
Renyel Pinto (2-0) recorded the final out in the bottom of the ninth to get the win.
Milton Bradley and Mike Fontenot hit back-to-back homers to begin the fifth inning to account for Chicago's runs. Theriot had two of the Cubs' five hits, as Chicago lost for the seventh time in nine games.
"What am I supposed to do?," questioned Cubs manager Lou Piniella. "I can start changing lineups around and let my bench play. I can do that."
Chris Volstad gave up three hits and two runs over seven innings in the start for the Marlins, while Chicago starter Sean Marshall was charged with six hits and a run over seven frames.
Alfredo Amezaga doubled to lead off the Florida 10th against Aaron Heilman (2-1). Pinch-hitter Wes Helms walked and Emilio Bonifacio then grounded a ball, but Theriot dropped the throw, leading to a run. Cameron Maybin added an RBI single before Jeremy Hermida walked to load the bases.
Cantu followed with a bases-clearing double to left before Dan Uggla finished the rally with an RBI double off reliever Angel Guzman.
"Sometimes the game is crazy," said Uggla. "There were four runs the whole game and it was going to be done in two hours, and all of sudden something happens when you score six like that."
Cantu hit a lead-off homer in the seventh inning and the Marlins tied it in the eighth thanks to another error. Pinch-hitter Ross Gload and Bonifacio each walked. Maybin then put down a sacrifice bunt, but Cubs pitcher Carlos Marmol threw the ball away, allowing the tying run to score.
Chicago had runners at first and second with two outs in the ninth, but pinch- hitter Reed Johnson grounded into a force play to end the threat.
