St. Louis Cardinals past the
Washington Nationals, 9-4, in the opener of a four- game series at Nationals Park. With Chris Duncan on first and one out in the top of the ninth, Ankiel doubled down the left-field line to drive in Duncan. St. Louis didn't stop there, adding four more runs in the frame to pad its lead. Ankiel had two RBI and a run scored for the Cardinals, who have won two in a row and their previous three series. Albert Pujols went 2- for-4 with a two-run homer. Pinch-hitter Brian Barden had an RBI, while Tyler Greene went 1-for-5 with an RBI and run scored in his major league debut. Mitchell Boggs tossed six innings, allowing four runs on six hits with nine strikeouts and two walks to pick up a no-decision for St. Louis. Chris Perez (1-1) recorded the final two outs in the eighth to collect the win. Rickie Weeks went 3-for-4 with an RBI and run scored for the Brewers, who have won four straight games. Jeff Suppan tossed a solid 6 1/3 innings, giving up one run on six hits with three strikeouts for Milwaukee. Mark DiFelice (2-0) relieved Suppan and recorded the final two outs in the seventh to collect the win. Trevor Hoffman allowed a hit and had two strikeouts in the ninth to pick up his second save of the year. Cantu finished with four RBI and the Marlins took advantage of an error from shortstop Ryan Theriot in the 10th to win their third in a row after a seven-game skid. Renyel Pinto (2-0) recorded the final out in the bottom of the ninth to get the win. Milton Bradley and Mike Fontenot hit back-to-back homers to begin the fifth inning to account for Chicago's runs. Theriot had two of the Cubs' five hits, as Chicago lost for the seventh time in nine games. Chris Volstad gave up three hits and two runs over seven innings in the start for the Marlins, while Chicago starter Sean Marshall was charged with six hits and a run over seven frames. Alfredo Amezaga doubled to lead off the Florida 10th against Aaron Heilman (2-1). Pinch-hitter Wes Helms walked and Emilio Bonifacio then grounded a ball, but Theriot dropped the throw, leading to a run. Cameron Maybin added an RBI single before Jeremy Hermida walked to load the bases. Cantu followed with a bases-clearing double to left before Dan Uggla finished the rally with an RBI double off reliever Angel Guzman.

They moved to 7-0 at Dodger Stadium this year, their best home start to a season since 1947 when they began 8-0 at Ebbets Field. That happened to be Jackie Robinson's rookie season. Ronald Belisario (1-2) got his first career win for pitching a scoreless seventh. Adrian Gonzalez went 2- for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI for the Padres, who have lost five of their last six games. Josh Geer threw six innings and gave up four runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. He also had two hits at the plate and drove in a run. Luke Gregerson (0-1) was saddled with the loss for giving up two runs on four hits while recording just one out in the seventh.
