New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - An upcoming book about Alex Rodriguez suggests the All-Star third baseman may have used steroids as early as high school and was suspected of using them while playing for the
New York Yankees.
In February, Rodriguez admitted to using steroids from 2001-03 when he was with the Texas Rangers, but a new book entitled "A-Rod" from Sports Illustrated writer Selena Roberts suggests he didn't give them up once coming to the Yankees.
Roberts broke the story that Rodriguez failed a steroid screening test in 2003, his MVP season with the Texas Rangers. That ultimately led to his admission of using performance-enhancing drugs.
The New York Daily News reports the book, scheduled to go on sale May 12 from publisher Harper Collins, details how Rodriguez was hiding the truth despite his admission. The book is a biography of Rodriguez from his boyhood in New York and the Dominican Republic, all the way through his time in the majors.
According to the Harper Collins web site's book description, "the whole of A- Rod's career mirrors the rise and fall of the steroid generation." Roberts also details A-Rod's relationship with Madonna, which led to the end of his marriage. Roberts also details Rodriguez' secret real estate deals and how the star player has insecurities that lead him to "seek support from a motivational guru before every game."
Back in February, Rodriguez said he was "curious" and called his use of steroids a "stupid mistake," but according to the Daily News, the book details how Rodriguez put on 15 pounds after the 2004 season and seemed to develop round pectorals. That condition is called gynecomastia, which can be caused by steroids, according to Roberts' book.
According to the Daily News, the book cites an unnamed major leaguer saying Rodriguez and steroid-tainted pitcher Kevin Brown were seen together with human growth hormone in 2004.
Rodriguez tested positive for steroids in 2003, results that were supposed to remain anonymous under an agreement between Major League Baseball and its players union.
The Daily News also reported the book details Rodriguez' long relationship with Dominican trainer Angel Presinal, who was banned from major league clubhouses after a steroids incident in 2001. However, the newspaper reported in January that Presinal was seen with A-Rod as recently as last year. Two other anonymous Yankees said they believed Rodriguez was using steroids based on side effects they saw.
Additionally, a former high school teammate of Rodriguez' told Roberts the soon-to-be No.1 MLB draft pick was on steroids and the coach knew it, according to the Daily News.
The 33-year-old Rodriguez, a three-time MVP, is about to start his sixth season with the Yankees. He continues to recover from hip surgery he underwent on March 9.
