(My Sportsbook) - The
Florida Marlins are trying to build another lengthy winning streak when they open a four-game series tonight against the
Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.
Florida opened the season with an 11-1 mark before losing seven in a row to fall back to earth. After dropping the opener of a three-game series to the New York Mets, the Marlins rebounded with back-to-back wins and wrapped up the series with Wednesday's 4-3 victory behind Cody Ross' two-run single in the eighth inning.
Jorge Cantu had a solo home run and scored twice, while Wes Helms added an RBI for the Marlins, who are 2-1 on a seven-game road trip. Josh Johnson started on the mound and gave up three runs on nine hits in six innings of work in the no-decision. Renyel Pinto got the win for throwing a scoreless seventh.
The NL East-leading Marlins may get shortstop Hanley Ramirez back in the lineup on Thursday after the All-Star missed the last two games with a bruised right wrist. Ramirez was hit on his right hand in Monday's loss at New York and was kept out of the next two games.
Chris Volstad will try to keep his unbeaten mark intact when he toes the rubber for the Marlins this evening. Volstad is 2-0 with a 2.70 ERA in four starts this season and is coming off consecutive no-decisions.
Volstad did not factor in the outcome of a 6-4 loss to Philadelphia on Saturday, as the righty surrendered three runs -- two earned -- and four hits over seven innings. He struck out six and walked one. Volstad, who won his first two starts of the season, is 0-0 with a 3.00 ERA in two career starts against the Cubs.
Chicago is coming off Wednesday's embarrassing 10-0 defeat at the hands of the Arizona Diamondbacks in the finale of a three-game set at Chase Field. Cubs starter Ryan Dempster lasted six-plus innings, surrendering five runs on six hits and three walks to absorb the loss.
Ryan Theriot and Aaron Miles had the only two hits for the Cubs, who have lost six of their last eight games and completed a sox-game road trip with a 2-4 record.
The Cubs will hand the ball to Sean Marshall on Thursday and he is 0-1 with a 4.50 ERA in four games (two starts) this season. Marshall lost his last start on April 25 at St. Louis, allowing three runs and six hits in six innings.
Marshall, a left-hander, hasn't fared too well against the Marlins in his career as evidenced by his 1-3 mark and 4.38 earned run average in five appearances, four of which have been starts.
Chicago won four of the seven meetings with Florida a year ago.
