(My Sportsbook) -
Arizona Diamondbacks starter Max Scherzer is still searching for his first major league win and will get another shot tonight in the opener of a four-game series against the
Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park.
Scherzer went 0-4 with a 3.05 earned run average in 16 games (seven starts) in his rookie campaign a year ago, and is 0-2 with a 4.91 earned run average through three starts this season. Scherzer has dropped back-to-back trips to the mound and is coming off an April 25 loss versus San Francisco. He yielded four runs in 4 2/3 innings of his team's 5-3 loss.
The right-hander, who also lost to the Giants on April 19, faced the Brewers for the first time in his career on June 3, 2008 and did not factor in the outcome of a 7-1 loss. He came on in relief and allowed three runs and three hits in an inning of work.
Arizona just completed a nine-game homestand in which it posted five victories and concluded with Wednesday's 10-0 pounding of the Chicago Cubs in the finale of a three-game series at Chase Field.
Chad Tracy ended with three hits and three runs batted in to provide the offense, while Justin Upton chipped in two hits and three RBI for the Diamondbacks, who got a strong performance from starting pitcher Doug Davis. Davis won his first start at home this season by yielding just two hits and three walks over seven shutout innings.
Davis also struck out seven batters and issued three walks. Arizona will now kick off an eight-game road trip against the Brewers, Dodgers and Padres.
Milwaukee completed a three-game sweep of the Pittsburgh Pirates on Wednesday thanks to an incredible effort by starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo. Gallardo helped the Brewers to their fifth straight sweep of the Pirates by pitching eight scoreless innings and belting his fourth career home run in a 1-0 win.
Gallardo struck out a career-high 11 batters and gave up just two hits and a walk for the Brewers, who have won eight of 10 games overall. Carlos Villanueva completed the shutout with a perfect ninth for his second save of the season. Milwaukee has now won 15 straight against the NL Central-rival Pirates and 18 in a row as the host in the series.
Taking the ball for the Brewers on Thursday will be Jeff Suppan, who is unbeaten (1-0) over his last two starts. Suppan defeated the New York Mets on April 19, allowing two runs in six innings of a 4-2 win, then recorded a no- decision against Houston on Saturday.
In the 9-8 victory over the Astros, Suppan was reached for four runs -- three earned -- in six innings of work to improve to 1-2 with a 7.32 ERA this season. The right-hander has faced the D'Backs eight times in his career and is 3-3 with a 4.43 earned run average.
Milwaukee went 5-2 against Arizona in 2008, with a three-game sweep of the D'Backs at home from June 2-4. The Brewers are 10-4 in the series since the start of the 2007 campaign and 6-1 as the host over that time.
