(My Sportsbook) - The
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim try to extend their season-high winning streak to four games this evening when they play the first of four games against the
New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium.
The injury-depleted Angels finished off a sweep in their brief two-game series with the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday, as Torii Hunter and Kendry Morales hit back-to-back home runs in the seventh to help Los Angeles to a 3-2 win at Camden Yards.
Morales drove in the other run with a triple and Shane Loux (1-2) got the win as he gave up just one run on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts in six-plus innings of work.
Heading to the hill for Los Angeles tonight will be 23-year-old right-hander Anthony Ortega, who suffered the loss in his first major league start on Saturday.
Ortega, the Angels minor league pitcher of the year in 2008, surrendered five runs and five hits in five innings to the Seattle Mariners in his team's 9-8 loss.
Meanwhile, after a four-game losing streak, which included a sweep at the hands of the Boston Red Sox, the Yankees have responded with consecutive wins, managing 19 runs in the final two games of their three-game set with the Detroit Tigers.
On Wednesday, Nick Swisher hit a home run from each side of the plate, totaling four RBI, as New York used a seven-run fourth inning and staved off a late Detroit run to take the rubber match from the Tigers, 8-6.
Hideki Matsui drove in three runs and Johnny Damon also knocked in a run for the Yankees, who had scored 10 runs in the seventh inning of their 11-0 win over the Tigers on Tuesday.
Joba Chamberlain (1-0) got the win after a solid performance which saw the righty go seven frames and give up a run on three hits with six strikeouts and three walks.
Robinson Cano finished 1-for-5 in the win to extend his hitting streak to a career-best 16 games.
Getting the ball for the Bronx Bombers tonight will be right-hander A.J. Burnett, who is coming off a disastrous start on Saturday against the Red Sox. Staked to a six-run lead at Fenway in that one, Burnett gave it all back, as he allowed eight runs and eight hits in five innings, but did not factor in the decision of his team's 16-11 loss.
Burnett, though, is 2-0 on the season with a 5.47 ERA.
The 32-year-old righty has faced the Angels four times and is 1-2 against them with a 4.50 ERA.
Tonight's contest will also feature a return to the Bronx for Angels outfielder Bobby Abreu, who spent the last two-plus seasons with the Yankees before signing in LA as a free agent this offseason.
New York first baseman Mark Teixeira will also be facing his former team for the first time. Teixeira appeared in 54 games for the Halos last season and hit .358 in his time with them, helping the Angels secure their fourth AL West crown in the last five years.
The Angels have had their way with the Yankees over the past few seasons, going 19-10 against them since the start of the 2006 season. Anaheim won seven of its 10 meetings with the Yanks last season, but split their four matchups at Yankee Stadium.
