Zurich, Switzerland (My Sportsbook) - Jason Spezza scored a pair of goals to lead Canada to a 7-3 win over Slovakia in the final game of Group A play at the 2009 World Hockey Championship.
Shea Weber added a goal and three assists for the Canadians, who wrapped up the preliminary round with a record of 3-0 and outscored their opponents 22-4. Steven Stamkos chipped in a goal and an assist in the victory, while Derek Roy, Ian White and Shane Doan also scored.
Martin St. Louis chipped in four helpers while Dwayne Roloson made 34 saves for Canada, which will play next in the qualification round.
Slovakia, despite a record of 1-1-1, also advanced to the qualification round from Group A, as the top three teams move on. Belarus also advanced from Group A after a 3-1 win over Hungary. The Hungarians lost all three of their games to finish last in the group and will play in the relegation round with the other three last-place teams.
Roy, Doan and Spezza scored power-play goals in the first period for Canada and the rout was on. After Tomas Surovy scored for Slovakia just 6:05 into the second period, White answered just over 3 1/2 minutes later and the Canadians tacked on power-play goals from Weber and Stamkos later in the period for a 6-1 cushion.
In Group B play, Russia notched a 4-2 win over Switzerland to finish atop the standings with a perfect mark of 3-0. Ilya Kovalchuk notched a goal and two assists in the victory for the defending champion Russians, who swept their three games by a combined score of 16-4.
Alexei Morozov, Alexander Perezhogin and Vitali Atyushov also scored for the Russians, while Ilya Bryzgalov stopped 37 shots in the victory.
The host nation finished second in the group thanks to victories over France and Germany. Martin Gerber turned aside 20 shots in defeat Tuesday, while Martin Pluss and Ryan Gardner scored for the Swiss.
Switzerland took a 2-1 lead after one period, as Gardner and Pluss each scored on the power play, but Kovalchuk netted his third goal of the tournament at 9:08 of the second period to tie it. Kovalchuk then set up Morozov on a 2-on-1 rush for the go-ahead tally 8:28 into the third and Perezhogin found the empty net to seal it.
France also advanced from Group B, finishing third thanks to a 2-1 win over Germany on Tuesday. The Germans will play in the relegation round.
Wednesday will mark the final day of preliminary round action. The United States, which has already advanced to the qualification round with a pair of earlier victories, will face Sweden in the Group C finale.
