(My Sportsbook) - The
Boston Red Sox go for their 12th straight win this evening when they continue their three-game series against the
Cleveland Indians at Progressive Field.
Boston continued its tear in the opener of this set on Monday, as Jason Bay cranked a three-run homer off Kerry Wood in the ninth, backing another terrific outing from Tim Wakefield in a 3-1 win.
Another win tonight would give the Red Sox their first 12-game run since June 16-29, 2006.
Wakefield, coming off two straight complete games, did not factor in the decision but allowed just one hit and four walks with five strikeouts in seven vintage frames. Bay, meanwhile, had three of Boston's eight hits.
Manny Delcarmen (1-0) was credited with the win after a perfect eighth, while Jonathan Papelbon picked up his fifth save for the Sox, who were coming off a 9-0 homestand, including three straight from the rival Yankees.
Wood (0-1) spoiled a stellar start from Cliff Lee, who resembled his Cy Young form of a year ago by scattering five hits with no walks and five strikeouts in eight scoreless innings for Cleveland, which has dropped three of four.
Boston, which now leads Toronto by percentage points in the AL East, is averaging 7.5 runs-per-game during the streak and is hitting .314. Bay has been particularly hot of late, going 9-for-14 in his last four games with two home runs and eight RBI.
Right-hander Brad Penny will try and stay undefeated this evening when he takes the hill for the Red Sox. Penny improved to 2-0 on Wednesday against Minnesota, as he allowed three runs (two earned) and six hits in six innings, lowering his earned run average to a still lofty 7.80.
Getting the ball for Cleveland tonight will be righty Anthony Reyes, who is 1-0 with a 4.76 ERA. Reyes pitched well enough to get the win in his last start on Thursday against Kansas City, yielding a pair of runs and four hits in six innings. However, he walked four batters and did not factor in the decision of his team's 5-2 win.
Both starters will be facing their opponents for the first time tonight.
Boston won five of its six games with the Indians last season and is 11-3 against them since the start of the 2007, including wins in six of its last seven matchups in Cleveland.
