Giants rally to edge Dodgers; Bonds at game

San Francisco, CA (My Sportsbook) - Pinch-hitter Bengie Molina's RBI groundout in the eighth inning proved to be the game-winner, as the San Francisco Giants edged the Los Angeles Dodgers, 5-4, in the opener of a three- game series at AT&T Park.

Molina grounded out softly to third baseman Casey Blake to score Edgar Renteria. Brian Wilson struck out the side in the ninth to pick up his fourth save of the year.

Renteria went 2-for-4 with two runs scored for the Giants, who opened a six- game homestand, capturing a win with former Giant Barry Bonds watching. Bonds sat between team CEO William Neukom and president Larry Baer. San Francisco won for the sixth time in its last seven contests.

Barry Zito went 6 1/3 innings, allowing three runs on five hits in a no- decision for San Francisco. Merkin Valdez (1-0) tossed 1 2/3 innings of relief, giving up one run on two hits to collect the win.

"I started to tire out there a little bit and I'm upset with myself for walking (Mark) Loretta and not bearing down on (Casey) Blake, giving that homer, that was very frustrating to me," Zito said. "I didn't go over 95 pitches all spring so once I got into that 110 area I tired out but I should be bearing down right there, that's unacceptable."

Blake hit a two-run homer to pace the Dodgers, who have lost two in a row after winning three straight. Manny Ramirez went 2-for-4 with an RBI.

Randy Wolf pitched six frames, allowing three runs on six hits. Wolf also fanned four in a no-decision for Los Angeles. Ronald Belisario (0-2) gave up a pair of runs on as many hits to take the loss.

"You give your team a chance to win. That's all you can do. We're fighting hard, we're doing the best we can. We've had a couple of frustrating losses. But we're a good team, we're going to recover. We'll be out here tomorrow and we're going to do our best," Wolf said.

Down 4-3, the Giants scored twice in the eighth. Fred Lewis and Renteria started the frame with back-to-back singles to set up a first and third. After Randy Winn went down swinging, Rich Aurilia reached base on an RBI fielder's choice. Lewis scored and Renteria moved to second to set up Molina's eventual game-winning grounder.

San Francisco scored three runs in the first inning to take an early lead. Renteria doubled after Lewis was retired on a foul tip. Winn then tripled to center. After Aurilia popped out, Aaron Rowand doubled for an RBI and Pablo Sandoval followed with a run-scoring single to center field.

The game turned into a pitchers' duel before the Dodgers put a four-spot on the board in the seventh to take the edge. Blake hit a one-out home run over the left-field wall to score Mark Loretta, who walked and advanced to second on a balk. Pinch-hitter Juan Pierre then singled and forced Zito out of the tilt.

Valdez walked Rafael Furcal to set up a first and second. Back-to-back singles from Orlando Hudson and Ramirez scored Pierre and Furcal, respectively. Matt Kemp hit into an inning-ending double play.

Game Notes

The Giants went 3-for-10 with runners in scoring position, while the Dodgers went 3-for-6...San Francisco left five runners on base, compared to six for Los Angeles.
