Calgary, AB (My Sportsbook) - Nikolai Khabibulin made 43 saves, backstopping Chicago to a 4-1 win over Calgary and helping the Blackhawks wrap up their first playoff series win in 13 years.
Chicago took the best-of-seven Western Conference quarterfinal series, 4-2, with the Game 6 win at Pengrowth Saddledome. The Blackhawks won their first postseason set since 1996, when they swept the Flames in the conference quarters.
"(Khabibulin) was awesome. He was a rock back there," Blackhawks defenseman Duncan Keith said. "Just the way he played, it speaks for itself."
Now Chicago has advanced after again topping Calgary, though only after doing something neither team could previously in the series -- win on the road. The fourth-seeded Blackhawks took the first two games and fifth-seeded Calgary won the next two before Chicago recorded a 5-1 victory in Game 5.
The Blackhawks will face third-seeded Vancouver, which swept the sixth-seeded Blues, in the West semifinals.
Dustin Byfuglien had a goal and two assists for the Blackhawks, while Patrick Kane added a goal and an assist. Adam Burish and Brian Campbell also scored, and along with Byfuglien, for the first time this postseason.
Todd Bertuzzi had the lone goal for the Flames, who have fallen out of the postseason in the first round four consecutive years. Miikka Kiprusoff allowed three goals on 15 shots in the loss.
Kane gave the Blackhawks the lead with a power-play tally just 2:20 into the game, and Burish scored later in the period for a decisive Chicago advantage.
Byfuglien skated with the puck behind the net on the right side, and centered a pass after emerging on the left. Burish was there for a one-timer, which he blasted past Kiprusoff at 10:11.
In the second period the Blackhawks went on the power play with 6:29 remaining. Again they capitalized, as Campbell scored with 5:03 to go, on a high slap shot from the top of the slot for the 3-0 lead.
The Blackhawks were 2-for-2 on power-play chances in Monday's game.
Bertuzzi got the Flames on the scoreboard only 54 seconds into the third period, but Khabibulin stopped the other 10 shots he saw in the frame, and Byfuglien added an empty-net marker in the final seconds to wrap up the victory.
