Houston, TX (My Sportsbook) - Houston Rockets center Dikembe Mutombo underwent successful surgery Monday to repair a ruptured quadricep tendon in his left knee. The seemingly ageless wonder suffered the season-ending knee injury in Game 2 of Houston's Western Conference quarterfinal series against the Trail Blazers last Tuesday. In the first quarter of the contest, Mutombo landed awkwardly on his leg late in the frame and left the court on a stretcher. Mutombo, 42, stated after the game that he would not attempt to make an attempt at a 19th season, ending the possible Hall-of-Famer's career. "I cried so much about it when I was laying on the floor," Mutombo told KRIV- TV. "But when I got in the locker room, (Rockets athletic trainer) Keith Jones and I talked that I needed to be positive and thank God for the wonderful 18 years I have." Mutombo is an eight-time All-Star and a four-time Defensive Player of the Year in his career with Denver, Atlanta, Philadelphia, New Jersey, New York and Houston. He has been known for his humanitarian work throughout the world, and in 1,196 career games -- 997 starts -- he has averaged 9.8 points, 10.3 rebounds and 2.8 blocks.
