Louisville, KY (My Sportsbook) - Former heavyweight champion Greg Page, who suffered a severe brain injury in a 2001 fight, has died at his Louisville home on Monday. He was 50. WHAS-TV in Louisville is reporting the Page's wife, Patricia, found the one- time World Boxing Association champion in his bed early on Monday. She stated that he died of complications stemming from the fight. The incident occurred after a fight on March 9, 2001 against Dale Crowe. He slipped into a coma for nearly a week and then had a stroke during post-fight surgery. He was paralyzed on his left side and received extensive physical therapy. He won a settlement in 2007 citing that Kentucky boxing officials failed to have medical personnel at the fight. Going into that fight, Page was 42-years-old and had a 58-16-1 career record. Page started fighting when he was young and had even sparred with Muhammad Ali. He became the National Golden Gloves heavyweight champion in 1978 at the age of 20. He eventually went to professional boxing and lost his first chance at the WBA heavyweight championship in 1984 in a match with Tim Witherspoon. Later that year, he KO'd Gerrie Coetzee in the eighth round of a fight in South Africa to claim the title, but lost it five months later on in a decision to Tony Tubbs. Page continued to box through 1993, but then took two years off after being knocked out by Bruce Seldon. He got back into the sport in 1996.
