Raleigh, NC (My Sportsbook) - Cam Ward made 28 saves for his third career playoff shutout, and Eric Staal recorded two goals and an assist, as Carolina staved off elimination with a 4-0 victory over the
New Jersey Devils in Game 6 of the teams' Eastern Conference quarterfinal series.
Ray Whitney contributed a goal and three assists for the Hurricanes, who will face off against the Devils in New Jersey in a deciding Game 7 on Tuesday. Jussi Jokinen also scored, while Chad LaRose contributed two assists in the winning effort.
The Hurricanes will face their first Game 7 since winning the Stanley Cup in 2006 with a 3-1 victory over Edmonton in the deciding game. The club is 2-3 all-time in Game 7's in its history in both Hartford and Carolina.
Brendan Shanahan had a team-high five shots for the Devils, who will participate in their 13th-ever Game 7. The team is 6-6 all-time in those bouts, with the last coming in the final game of the 2003 Stanley Cup Finals, when the Devils defeated the Anaheim Ducks, 3-0.
Martin Brodeur stopped 33-of-37 shots in the loss for New Jersey.
Just past the midway point of the first, New Jersey failed on a clearing attempt and the Hurricanes controlled the puck after Staal's slapshot was saved by Brodeur. Staal got the puck behind the net and flipped it out in front, where Whitney batted it out of mid-air past the netminder for the tally at 10:32.
New Jersey had two power plays in the final minutes of the first but couldn't register a single shot on either chance. Carolina outshot the Devils, 15-4, in the opening frame.
Carolina took a 2-0 lead at 4:44 of the second. Moments after a failed Hurricanes power play, LaRose forced a turnover in the Devils' zone, and the puck eventually went to Whitney. The winger dished over to Staal, who fired a shot off Brodeur's left skate and into the net.
The Hurricanes took a commanding 3-0 edge less than three minutes later on an odd-man rush, as Whitney sent a perfect pass across the ice to Staal, who one- timed the puck into the empty net past Brodeur, who was out of position.
The Devils looked to get on the board just a couple minutes later, but Ward robbed Shanahan with a great glove save on a wrister from the slot.
Ward was spectacular in the second, making 11 saves to keep New Jersey off the board.
With a 5-on-3 power play midway through the third, Carolina put the game away, as Whitney dished across the crease to Jokinen, who easily deposited the puck into the net at 9:12 for a 4-0 lead.
Ward made 13 saves in the third to preserve the shutout.
