(My Sportsbook) - Justin Masterson tries to pitch the
Boston Red Sox to their 10th straight win and a sweep in their three-game series with the
New York Yankees, as the two hated rivals conclude their wild set from Fenway Park.
Masterson, filling in for the injured Daisuke Matsuzaka, held the Baltimore Orioles to a run and four hits in 5 1/3 innings on Monday to nail down his first win of the season. He had made four relief appearances before that start without recording a decision.
The 24-year-old hurler is 0-2 in five games (one start) against the Yankees with a 4.82 ERA.
Hoping to avoid the brooms for the Yankees tonight will be left-hander Andy Pettitte, who is 2-0 with a 2.53 earned run average. Pettitte picked up a win against the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday, as he allowed a pair of runs and nine hits in seven innings.
Pettitte is 16-8 lifetime against the Red Sox with a 3.74 ERA in 32 games, 30 of which have been starts.
Should he win tonight and Mariano Rivera get the save, it will be the 58th time Rivera has closed out a victory for Pettitte, which will pass Oakland Hall of Famer Dennis Eckersley and starter Bob Welch for the highest total in major league history.
After rallying for a win in the opener on Friday, Boston came back from six runs down on Saturday, as Jason Varitek stroked a grand slam and Mike Lowell drove in six runs, helping the Red Sox to a 16-11 win.
Jason Bay went 2-for-3 with three runs scored and as many driven in for Boston, which hasn't lost since a 6-5, 12-inning loss to Oakland on April 14.
The Red Sox haven't won 10 in a row since a 12-game run from June 16-29, 2006.
Kevin Youkilis scored four times as Boston overcame its biggest deficit against the Yankees since May 16, 1968.
Josh Beckett lasted five-plus innings and was touched for eight runs on 10 hits with four walks and three strikeouts. Hideki Okajima (1-0) got the win despite giving up a homer in the eighth inning.
Robinson Cano went 3-for-6 with a pair of homers and tied a career-high with five RBI for the Yankees, who lost their second consecutive game on the heels of a three-game winning streak. Johnny Damon added a two-run homer, while Nick Swisher and Jorge Posada had two hits each and an RBI in the setback.
A.J. Burnett was roughed up for eight runs on as many hits in five innings of work, but did not factor in to the decision. Jonathan Albaladejo (1-1) was saddled with the loss after giving up three runs on two hits while retiring only one batter in the seventh inning.
These teams split 18 matchups a year ago.
Boston hasn't swept a three-game set from the Yankees since turning the trick in Beantown from April 20-22, 2007.
