Philadelphia, PA (My Sportsbook) - Team USA avenged a pair of relay errors at the 2008 Beijing Olympics to win the men's and women's 400-meter relay events Saturday at the Penn Relays.
The U.S. won four of the six races in what was billed "USA vs. The World" on Saturday.
At the Olympics, Jamaica won the 400-meter men's relay in a world-record time of 37.10 seconds when Nesta Carter, Michael Frater, Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell accomplished the feat. It was much different story in the 88-degree heat at Franklin Field, as the American foursome of Walter Dix, Travis Padgett, Shawn Crawford and Darvis Patton won Saturday in 37.92 seconds. Another American squad, this one of Terrence Trammell, Mark Jelks, Ivory Williams and Mike Rodgers, came in second.
"I'm not saying it's a revenge thing, but it's nice to come back, defend and win on your home turf," said Crawford, the 2004 Olympic 200-meter gold medalist. "Over the thing with what happened with dropping the sticks, we try to prevent that from happening anymore. So now that that's over we can concentrate on getting the stick around. It doesn't matter how fast you guys are if you can't get the stick around. It's useless."
Meanwhile, Jamaica finished last on Saturday in 41.24 seconds, although Bolt wasn't part of the foursome, as Dwight Thomas stood in. Powell was hurt toward the end of the race.
In the women's 400-meter relay, Lauryn Williams, Allyson Felix, Mechelle Lewis and Carmelita Jeter won the event for the U.S. in 42.40 seconds. Jamaica finished second and the Bahamas came in third.
In the women's 1,600-meter relay, the U.S. quartet of Monica Hargrove, Natasha Hastings, Felix and Sanya Richards won in a time of 3 minutes, 23.08 seconds. The Americans edged Jamaica despite Hastings losing her shoe on the second leg of the race.
"In this atmosphere, when it came off, I did think to stop, but then I couldn't stop because I had to go and think of who I was running with," said Hastings. "This is the first time [this has happened]. Of course it had to happen here."
The U.S. men's combination of Kerron Clement, Angelo Taylor, David Neville and LaShawn Merritt won the 1,600-meter relay in 2:59.78, topping a team from the Bahamas.
Jamaica won the USA vs. the World Sprint Medley, and Kenya came out on top in the USA vs. the World Distance Medley.
