Boston MA (My Sportsbook) - The
New York Yankees made a slew of roster moves on Saturday, which included placing pitcher Brian Bruney and third baseman Cody Ransom on the disabled list.
Bruney was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained flexor mass in his right elbow and Ransom was put on the 60-day disabled list with a strained quadriceps muscle.
Bruney is 2-0 with a 3.38 ERA in nine appearances for New York this season. The righty has fanned 12 batters and walked just two over eight innings.
"Bruney has a strained flexor mass," said Yankees manager Joe Girardi. "We expect him to take a week's rest and then throw again in a week. You're looking at two-to-three weeks if it reacts the way we expect it to."
Ransom, starting at third base in lieu of the injured Alex Rodriguez, is batting .180 with six RBI in 53 plate appearances this season for the Yankees.
He injured the quad stealing second base during Friday's 5-4 11-inning loss to Boston.
Pitcher Mark Melancon and infielder Angel Berroa had their contracts purchased from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre by the Yankees, and righty Humberto Sanchez was released.
In addition to these moves, the club also placed pitcher Chien-Ming Wang on the 15-day disabled list with weakness in the adductor muscles of both hips and recalled pitcher David Robertson from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday.
Phil Hughes is slated to take Wang's spot in the rotation on Tuesday in Detroit.
"Hughes has been throwing the ball really well," said Girardi. "His last outing was exceptional. His fastball, cutter and curveball have been really good and his changeup is coming. We're excited about the reports and his start."
