Savannah, GA (My Sportsbook) - Tom Lehman, playing in his first Champions Tour event, and Bernhard Langer teamed for an 11-under 61 on Friday to share first with Fuzzy Zoeller and John Jacobs after the first round of the Legends of Golf.
Masters champions Sandy Lyle and Ian Woosnam paired for a 10-under 62 are alone in third place at The Westin Savannah Harbor Resort and Spa.
This is the event that spawned the Champions Tour and its a three-day birdie fest contested in best-ball format over all three rounds.
Last week's Outback Steakhouse Pro-Am winner Nick Price and Mark O'Meara shot a nine-under 63 and were joined in fourth place by John Cook and Joey Sindelar and the duo of Jeff Sluman and Craig Stadler.
The Lehman/Langer pairing made five birdies through its first eight holes. Langer drove into the rough at the par-four ninth, but holed a pitching-wedge for an eagle to get them to minus-seven.
"I thought if I catch it solid and on line, it shouldn't be too far away, and it turned out that I ended up perfect," said Langer.
The tandem picked up another birdie at 13, then Lehman kicked in a short birdie putt at No. 14. Lehman made another short birdie putt at the 16th to tie for the lead.
Lehman hit a spectacular four-iron inside three feet at the par-three 17th. He tapped that in for birdie to take first, only to be tied a few groups later by Zoeller and Jacobs.
Still, a share of the lead after one round is a nice start for Lehman's career on the 50-and-over circuit.
"I can't think of a better tournament to start with in the Champions Tour," said Lehman. "Team events are so much fun, and there's obviously a great bunch of guys here this week, a lot of guys that I saw Monday and Tuesday that I haven't seen in a long time."
The Zoeller/Jacobs team netted eight birdies in 11 holes. They parred the 12th, then Jacobs caught fire with the flat stick. He drained a 20-foot birdie putt at 13 and a seven-footer for birdie at the 14th.
Zoeller sank a short birdie putt at the 16th and that was enough to match Lehman and Langer.
Loren Roberts and Mark Wiebe combined for an eight-under 64 and share seventh with Mike Goodes and D.A. Weibring.
Bruce Fleisher and Tom Jenkins and Fred Funk and Scott Hoch are tied for ninth at minus-seven.
Defending champions Andy North and Tom Watson only managed a six-under 66 and are part of a large group tied for 11th.
Lanny Wadkins was elected into the World Golf Hall of Fame on Thursday, but on Friday, he and his brother Bobby posted a three-under 69 and are tied for 27th.
