Morelia, Michoacan, Mexico (My Sportsbook) - Defending champion Lorena Ochoa fired an eight-under 65 to take a one-stroke lead after the first round of the Corona Championship.
Ochoa has finished no worse than tied for second at this event over the last three years. She posted a bogey-free round on the par-73 Tres Marias Residential Golf Club.
Michelle Wie played her final five holes in five-under par en route to a seven-under 66. She was joined in second place by Na Yeon Choi.
Ochoa played the back nine first and got going with three birdies in her first four holes. After a pair of pars, she moved to four-under with a three-foot birdie putt on the par-five 16th.
The women's world No. 1 birdied the third and fifth to climb to six-under. Ochoa collected back-to-back birdies from the seventh to take the lead by one.
"I think that it was really important to come in and get a good start," Ochoa stated. "I am glad that I took advantage of the good conditions. It was very calm in the morning. I just have to keep my patience and hopefully I can play as well as today."
Ochoa missed her own course record by a single stroke. InBee Park owns a share of the course record of 64 with Ochoa.
Like Ochoa, Wie opened with three birdies in her first four holes from the 10th. However, she stumbled to a bogey on the 14th. Wie erased that mistake with a birdie on the par-five 18th.
The young Hawaiian parred her first three holes on the front nine. Wie faltered to a bogey on the par-four fourth, but she came right back with a four-foot eagle putt on the fifth to jump to four-under.
Wie closed with three birdies over her final four holes to get within one of Ochoa's lead.
"I am playing well. I know what I need to do out there [Friday], so hopefully I can just go out and play my best," said Wie. "I have been just plugging away, so I can only try my best."
Choi carded birdies on one, five and eight. Around the turn, she poured in three straight birdie chances from the 10th to jump to minus-six. Choi got within one thanks to a birdie on 14 before she parred her last four holes.
"I played almost perfectly today," Choi stated. "I just try to think about a target on each hole, and just try to hit it. I trust the yardage that I get from my caddie. When I am playing, I try not to think about the score. I just try to think about playing good golf."
Sarah Lee, Sandra Gal, Anna Nordqvist and Eunjung Yi share fourth place at six-under-par 67. Silvia Cavalleri, Jill McGill, Katherine Hull and Kristy McPherson are one shot further back at minus-five.
