Boston, MA (My Sportsbook) - Tim Wakefield got an abbreviated complete game win, and three two-run homers helped the Boston Red Sox defeat the Minnesota Twins, 10-1, in a rain-shortened seven-inning game.

The second game of a day-night doubleheader is scheduled for 7:10 p.m. (et) Wednesday.

Wakefield (2-1) allowed a run on five hits and a walk in his second consecutive complete game for the Red Sox, who have won six straight after starting 2-6. The knuckleballer also struck out four, while Kevin Youkilis, Nick Green and Mike Lowell each launched a two-run homer to build an early lead.

"He was good," said Boston manager Terry Francona of Wakefield. "The weather cooperated enough where it didn't get in the way of his outing and we didn't bring anybody else in so I think we caught a break there. He threw knuckle balls in the strike zone that moved, and he was tremendous."

Justin Morneau knocked in the only run for the Twins, who were coming off a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels. Scott Baker (0-2) was knocked around to the tune of six runs, ten hits and a walk while striking out a pair in 4 2/3 innings.

"I'm not that discouraged," said Baker. "Right now, it's not going well. I need to pitch better. Really, that's all there is to it. Physically I feel great. The stuff is there I just need to be more consistent. For the most part, I was down today. It just seemed like every pitch that wasn't where I wanted it to be, they hit it."

Youkilis put the Red Sox ahead, 2-0, in the first inning with a home run that barely snuck around the foul pole in right field.

Boston doubled its lead in the second, as George Kottaras drew a one-out walk and scored on Green's two-run homer over the Green Monster.

Yet another two-run homer for the Red Sox, this one from Lowell in the third, put the home team ahead, 6-0.

Minnesota got on the board in the fifth. Carlos Gomez hit a one-out double, and Denard Span was hit by a pitch. Green's error on a grounder from Alexi Casilla loaded the bases, and Morneau knocked a run in on a single to right.

Facing Juan Morillo, the Red Sox extended their lead in the seventh, loading the bases with nobody out on a David Ortiz double and walks by Youkilis and J.D. Drew. Jason Bay drew a four-pitch walk to force home a run, and Lowell drove in another run with a single to left off R.A. Dickey.

Kottaras followed with a sacrifice fly to score Drew, and Green made it 10-1 with a ground-rule double that plated Bay. The tarp then came out on the field as the rain began to get heavy, and after a long delay, the game was ended prematurely.

Game Notes

Francona celebrated his 50th birthday Wednesday. It is the third year in a row that the Red Sox have won on his birthday...The Red Sox selected the contract of first baseman/outfielder Jeff Bailer to the active roster from Triple-A Pawtucket. To make room on the 40-man roster, the team placed pitcher Devern Hansack on unconditional release waivers...Drew went 3-for-3 with two runs scored for Boston, while Lowell also had three hits and drove in three runs in the game...Ortiz had a pair of hits and two runs scored...No Twins player had a multi-hit game.
