(My Sportsbook) - The top-seeded
Boston Bruins will try to complete a sweep of the rival
Montreal Canadiens tonight when they visit the Habs at Bell Centre for Game 4 of the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarterfinals.
The Bruins have jumped out to a three games to none lead in this series by winning the first two meetings on home ice and earning Monday's Game 3 triumph in Montreal.
Boston will now try for its first playoff sweep of the rival Canadiens since ousting Montreal in four games back in the 1992 divisional finals. That was also the last sweep by either team in this postseason matchup.
The Bruins are also trying to win their first postseason series since defeating Carolina in the opening round of the 1999 playoffs.
The Canadiens now have the daunting task of trying to recover from a 3-0 deficit to win a series -- a feat that has only been achieved twice in NHL history. The last club to pull off the comeback was the 1975 New York Islanders, who outlasted Pittsburgh in seven games during the quarterfinals.
If Montreal is able to extend the series tonight, the clubs will meet again for Saturday's Game 5 matchup in Boston. Montreal has a solid 24-10-7 record at the Bell Centre this year, but Boston was 24-13-4 on the road to match Detroit for most wins as the visitor this season.
After posting a decisive 5-1 victory in Boston on Saturday, the Bruins recorded a 4-2 victory in Monday's Game 3 encounter in Montreal. Michael Ryder continued to haunt his former club, netting the game-winner late in the second period to lead the Bruins to the victory at Bell Centre.
Ryder was drafted by the Canadiens in 1998 and spent his first four NHL seasons in Montreal before signing a three-year deal with the Bruins this past summer. He has two goals and two assists in this series.
Phil Kessel, Shawn Thornton and Chuck Kobasew also scored for the Bruins, while Tim Thomas earned the victory with a 23-save effort for Boston.
Chris Higgins and Yannick Weber found the net for the eighth-seeded Canadiens, who have dropped their last seven playoff games since winning Game 1 against Philadelphia in last year's conference semifinals.
Carey Price, back between the pipes after getting pulled in Saturday's setback, made 26 stops in defeat.
Montreal and the Bruins are meeting in the postseason for the second straight year after Montreal ousted the Bruins in seven games during the opening round of the 2008 postseason. However, the teams were in opposite positions last year when the No. 1 Habs eliminated the eighth-seeded Bruins.
The Habs and B's are also facing off in a playoff series for the 32nd time, which is the most postseason battles between two clubs in NHL history. The Bruins have had very little success against Montreal in the playoffs through the years, as the Habs have taken 24 of the 31 postseason series between the Original Six rivals.
The Canadiens have won the last three postseason matchups against the B's and Boston last beat Montreal in the playoffs in the opening round of the 1994 postseason.
