Baltimore, MD (My Sportsbook) - The Baltimore Orioles placed utilityman Ryan Freel on the 15-day disabled list after he was hit in the head with a ball in Monday's loss to the Red Sox. In the top of the third, Freel was on second base and Justin Masterson threw to the bag in a pick-off attempt. The ball, though, hit off the right side of Freel's head and he then smacked his face into the ground. After being attended to by trainers for several minutes while laying on the ground, Freel was eventually helped off the field and into the locker room. He was then taken to a nearby hospital where he received a CT scan. On the season, Freel has appeared in nine games and has two hits in 15 at-bats with one RBI. To replace Freel on the roster, the team recalled outfielder Lou Montanez from Triple-A Norfolk. He appeared in 38 games for the Orioles last season, batting .295 with three homers and 14 RBI. In 10 games for the Tides this season, Montanez was batting .429. Baltimore also recalled pitcher Brad Bergesen from Norfolk to make a spot start Tuesday against the White Sox. Bergesen will be making his major league debut and had a combined 16-7 record with a 3.10 earned run average in 28 games -- 26 starts -- for two minor league teams last season. The 23-year-old right-hander was 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA in two starts at Norfolk this season. He was the Orioles' top minor league pitcher in 2008. Pitcher Radhames Liz was optioned to Norfolk following Monday's game against Boston to open a roster spot for Bergesen.
