Calgary, AB (My Sportsbook) - David Moss scored twice in the third period and Miikka Kiprusoff made 36 saves, as the
Calgary Flames defeated the Chicago Blackhawks, 4-2, in Game 3 of their Western Conference quarterfinal series at Pengrowth Saddledome.
Eric Nystrom and Rene Bourque also tallied for the fifth-seeded Flames, who avoided falling into a three games to none hole in this best-of-seven set.
Patrick Sharp and Martin Havlat both registered a goal and an assist for the fourth-seeded Blackhawks, while Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 24 of the 28 shots he faced in defeat.
"We just made the little mistakes tonight and that was the difference," said Chicago captain Jonathan Toews.
Game 4 is scheduled for Wednesday in Calgary.
It was an unsettling start for the Flames, as forward Olli Jokinen committed a tactless roughing penalty just 1:54 into the contest. Chicago wasted little time on the subsequent power play, needing only nine seconds to light the lamp. Toews held the puck on the goal line at the right side of the net and sent a cross-ice pass that was one-timed by Sharp.
Calgary knotted the score at the 6:40 mark of the first period when Nystrom collected a feed from Curtis Glencross and fired a wrister from the right circle that sailed over the glove of Khabibulin.
"I think we got some good breaks tonight," said Nystrom. "I think they've been kind of bouncing away from us the first couple of games, but this guy's (Khabibulin) a Stanley Cup winner and has been in the playoffs. We have to continue to keep our game plan to get pucks and bodies there (at the net). It's tough to rattle a goalie that has a lot of experience, but tonight was definitely good to get some bounces and score some goals."
The home team grabbed the lead with 2:53 remaining in the middle frame, as Bourque wheeled around the right post and banked the puck off Khabibulin.
After squandering the lead late in Game 1 and watching a two-goal advantage evaporate in Game 2, Calgary was determined not to allow it to happen again and slammed the door against the resilient and youthful Blackhawks in the third period.
Moss picked up the rebound of an Adam Pardy shot between the circles and fired it home 1:18 into the third, and was credited with a second marker at 5:24. Moss went to the net and had Glencross' offering deflect off his right skate and through the pads of Khabibulin.
Havlat lit the lamp with 4:25 left to play, and the remainder of the game was highlighted by cheap shots and verbal jousting.
