Big Unit stifles former mates, carries Giants over D'Backs

San Francisco, CA (My Sportsbook) - Randy Johnson allowed one hit in seven shutout innings as the San Francisco Giants edged the Arizona Diamondbacks, 2-0, in the rubber match of a three-game set at AT&T Park.

Johnson (1-2), making his first appearance against Arizona in his 22-year career, gave up only a double in the seventh inning while striking out seven and walking two. It was his first win with the Giants after joining the team as a free agent in the offseason and now has 296 career victories. Brian Wilson earned his second save of the season.

"I know I didn't throw that many pitches," Johnson said. "But it was a one-run ballgame. It was the most innings I've pitched this year. There will be a day when I maybe go eight or nine, but right now it's still early. There's no sense in pushing anything."

The big left-hander spent eight seasons with the Diamondbacks, compiling a 118-62 record with a 2.83 earned run average in 233 games, including 232 starts. He also claimed four of his five Cy Young Awards with the D-Backs and a World Series title. Arizona is the only team he has never faced.

Travis Ishikawa knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly and pinch-hitter Rich Aurilia grounded into a double-play that scored another for the Giants, who took two of three in the series. Despite the win, San Francisco has dropped seven of nine.

Pablo Sandoval turned in a 3-for-4 effort with a triple, while Bengie Molina had two hits and a run scored in the win.

Augie Ojeda had a double, which proved to be Arizona's only hit. The Diamondbacks have lost six of eight overall.

"Of course it's a concern," Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin said of the lack of offense. "We haven't swung the bat well to this point and that's why we have the record that we have. We've had some real good pitching performances and you don't swing the bat, you put a lot of pressure on your pitching staff to have to be perfect and at this point we have to be perfect."

Max Scherzer (0-1) was the hard-luck loser, as the 24-year-old allowed one run on three hits with six strikeouts and four walks, and is still in search of his first big-league win.

With the Giants holding a 1-0 lead and Johnson pitching a perfect game through four innings, the "Big Unit" issued a walk to Tony Clark to lead off the fifth. But Chris Young grounded into a fielders' choice, then was picked off while attempting to steal second. Justin Upton flied out to end the inning.

After San Francisco wasted a one-out triple by Sandoval in the sixth, Johnson gave up his first hit of the contest in the seventh when Ojeda roped a double down the left-field line to lead off the inning. Eric Byrnes then dropped a sac bunt to move Ojeda to third, but Felipe Lopez grounded out and Clark struck out swinging to end the inning.

Bob Howry replaced Johnson in the eighth and retired the side in order. In the home half, Molina and Aaron Rowand led off the frame with back-to-back singles, putting runners on first and second.

Scott Schoeneweis then replaced Jon Rauch, and Sandoval greeted the lefty with a single to left to load the bases. Tony Pena took over for Schoeneweis and got Aurilia to ground into a 6-4-3 double-play, however a run scored to put the Giants ahead 2-0. Edgar Renteria grounded out to end the frame.

In the top of the ninth, Wilson came on to try and lock up the win and set the D-Backs down in order.

After a scoreless 3 1/2 innings, the Giants were able to muster a run in the bottom of the fourth. Randy Winn walked to get things started and a single by Molina and free pass to Rowand loaded the bases with nobody out. Sandoval then went down on strikes, but Ishikawa lifted a sacrifice fly to right to put the Giants in front.

Game Notes
