Bronx, NY (My Sportsbook) - Jorge Posada's controversial pinch-hit two-run homer in the seventh highlighted a Yankees 7-3 comeback victory over the
Cleveland Indians, salvaging a split in the four-game series at New York's new stadium.
Trailing 3-1 heading to the seventh, the Yankees scored three runs each in the seventh and eighth innings to take the victory.
Cody Ransom drove in three runs with a bases-loaded double, and Robinson Cano scored twice for the Yankees, who have come back to win in each of the three games following a Chien-Ming Wang loss this season. A.J. Burnett has started those three games but did not receive a decision Sunday, allowing three runs on three hits and seven walks in 6 1/3 innings while striking out a pair.
Jonathan Albaladejo (1-0) notched the victory after getting out of a one-out, bases-loaded jam in the seventh.
Shin-Soo Choo and Ryan Garko homered to account for all three runs for the Indians, who have split eight games after an 0-5 start. Carl Pavano, after defecting from the Yankees in the offseason to sign with the Indians, threw six sterling innings, giving up just a run on four hits and a walk, with four strikeouts.
Jensen Lewis (1-2) took the loss after giving up Posada's homer.
Ahead 3-1, the Indians threatened in the seventh, loading the bases with one out thanks to three walks and two wild pitches from Burnett. The Yankees starter was lifted in favor of Albaladejo, who induced a fielder's choice groundout from Mark DeRosa and another groundout from Victor Martinez to leave the runners stranded.
The Yankees then took the lead with three runs in the home half. Rafael Perez came in to pitch for the Indians and surrendered a double to Cano and an RBI single to Hideki Matsui.
Lewis came on to pitch, and pinch-hitter Posada launched a shot to right field that, after a lengthy replay, was called a two-run homer. The ball barely went past the outstretched glove of Trevor Crowe and several fans, eventually landing back onto the field after it bounced off the top of the wall.
New York extended its lead in the eighth. With the bases loaded and two outs, Ransom hit a high fly ball down the left field line that barely bounced fair, clearing the bases and giving the Yankees a 7-3 lead.
Mariano Rivera pitched a scoreless ninth to secure the win.
The Indians took the lead in the second, as Choo blasted a leadoff homer to right field.
Choo worked a two-out walk in the fourth, and Garko followed with a line drive homer down the left field line to make it a 3-0 game.
Pavano retired the first 10 batters he faced, but Derek Jeter lined a double into the gap in right-center with one out in the fourth. With two outs, Mark Teixeira lined an RBI single to right to cut the deficit to two.
The Yankees started the sixth with consecutive singles from Jose Molina and Brett Gardner. Pavano induced Jeter into a 4-6-3 double play but hit Johnny Damon with a pitch and walked Teixeira to load the bases. Nick Swisher, though, struck out for the third time in as many at bats to end the threat.
