(My Sportsbook) - The
New Jersey Devils and Carolina Hurricanes will both try for a series edge when they get together for Game 3 of the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarterfinals tonight at RBC Center in Raleigh.
The Hurricanes were able to earn a split in the first two games of the series in New Jersey. The Devils posted a decisive 4-1 win in Wednesday's Game 1 encounter, but Carolina struck back with an overtime victory in the second game on Friday.
Carolina, which will also host Game 4 on Tuesday, had an excellent 26-14-1 record as the home team this season and ended the regular season with victories in 12 of 13 contests at RBC. The Devils, meanwhile, come into tonight with losses in their last three stops in Raleigh.
New Jersey did have a solid 23-15-3 record as the visiting club during the regular season, giving the Devils the second-highest road win total behind Boston and Detroit's 24 victories away from home.
Tim Gleason's point shot was deflected into the net 2:40 into OT, as Carolina edged New Jersey, 2-1, in Game 2 at the Prudential Center.
Gleason blasted a shot on net shortly into the extra session, as the Hurricanes' Eric Staal and Devils' Niclas Havelid screened New Jersey goaltender Martin Brodeur. The puck appeared to angle off Havelid's skate and tucked into the right side of the net, giving Carolina the win.
Staal and New Jersey's Zach Parise each scored a power-play goal in regulation for their respective teams.
Brodeur made 30 saves in the loss for New Jersey, which lost captain Jamie Langenbrunner to a lower-body injury.
The Devils will not have Langenbrunner for at least the next two games, as he did not make the trip to Raleigh. He was third on the team this season in both goals (29) and points (69).
Cam Ward stopped 33-of-34 shots for the Hurricanes and rebounded from a rough outing in Game 1.
New Jersey fell to 0-5 all-time in playoff overtime games against the Hurricanes, while Brodeur is now 11-20 in postseason OT tests during his storied career.
This is the fourth time since 2001 these two teams have met in the postseason. New Jersey won the first matchup en route to the Stanley Cup Final in 2001 but lost to the Hurricanes in both 2002 and 2006. Carolina went on to win the franchise's lone Stanley Cup in 2006.
