(My Sportsbook) - Two of the American League's premier young right-handers face off today at Tropicana Field in the finale of a four-game series between two recent playoff combatants, the
Chicago White Sox and Tampa Bay Rays.
Starting for the White Sox will be 26-year-old Gavin Floyd, who's split a pair of decisions so far this season while allowing 11 hits and eight runs in 12 innings.
He opened with a solid effort - six hits, two runs in seven innings - in a 2-0 loss to Kansas City, then rebounded with a win over Detroit while nonetheless being tagged for five hits and six runs in five innings.
The Annapolis, Maryland native was a career-best 17-8 in 33 starts for Chicago last season, posting a 3.84 earned run average in a career-high 206 1/3 innings.
Floyd didn't face the Rays at all in the 2008 regular season, but dropped a 6-2 decision to Tampa Bay in decisive Game 4 of the American League Division Series at U.S Cellular Field.
Going for the Rays will be 25-year-old Matt Garza, who is in his second season with the team after a trade that sent former phenom Delmon Young to the Minnesota Twins.
He was 11-9 over 30 starts in the regular season for Tampa Bay, then went 2-1 on four postseason starts, including Most Valuable Player honors in the American League Championship Series against Boston.
Against Chicago, he dropped a 5-3 decision in Game 3 of the ALDS, allowing seven hits and five runs in six innings.
Garza did not face the White Sox in the 2008 regular season.
So far in 2009, he has allowed nine hits and three runs over 14 innings against Boston and the New York Yankees.
On Saturday, Paul Konerko was 3-for-5 with a two-run homer and three RBI, as the White Sox defeated the Rays, 8-3.
Carlos Quentin also had three hits, including a solo home run, for the White Sox, who have won five of their last seven games. Mark Buehrle (2-0) earned the win after allowing three runs on eight hits with three walks and five strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings.
Carlos Pena knocked in two runs for the Rays, who have lost four of five. Carl Crawford and Jason Bartlett both collected three hits, with Crawford scoring twice.
Scott Kazmir (2-1) was saddled with the loss after yielding six runs on five hits with six walks and five strikeouts in four-plus innings of work.
Tampa Bay won six of its 10 matchups with the White Sox last season.
