Shanghai, China (My Sportsbook) - Sebastian Vettel overcame rainy conditions and put on a dominating performance to win Sunday's Chinese Grand Prix at Shanghai International Circuit and give Red Bull Racing its maiden Formula One victory.
With rain steadily falling in Shanghai, the race started behind the safety car with all drivers on wet tires. Vettel led the way after capturing the first F1 pole for Red Bull on Saturday.
"It was the right decision to start behind the safety car, because there was quite a lot of standing water," Vettel said. "It was okay at some points, but some corners at every lap, it was a lot of aqua-planing, sometimes less and sometimes more, depending on the rain. It was very difficult throughout the whole race."
After eight laps, the safety car came in and the green flag waved with Vettel pulling away from teammate Mark Webber. Fernando Alonso gave up the second position when he pitted for another set of wet tires on the seventh lap.
Vettel made his first stop on lap 15 and handed the lead over to Jenson Button. Vettel rejoined the field in third. Button held a 10-second lead over his Brawn GP teammate Rubens Barrichello on the following lap.
While Jarno Trulli was running slow with no rear wing, Robert Kubica slammed into him. Trulli sustained heavy damage to his car and was the first driver to retire from the event.
When the safety car was deployed on the next lap due to the incident, Button pitted from the lead, allowing Vettel to reclaim the top spot. Button came back out in second.
Vettel pitted again from the lead to take on wet tires on lap 37, but reclaimed the top position for good four laps later when he drove past Button. Webber moved into the second spot soon after.
"I'm extremely happy, second time in the wet that I have won a grand prix, Vettel said. "The car was fantastic. The team did a really good job in preparing the car yesterday in qualifying, but nonetheless we were struggling a little bit with reliability. We were able to fix it overnight."
Last September, Vettel put on a dominating performance in the rain-soaked Italian Grand Prix to give his former team, Toro Rosso, its first-ever F1 victory. The German also became the youngest pole sitter and race winner on the racing circuit at age 21.
Vettel recorded his second career F1 victory at Shanghai.
Webber matched his career-best finish of second and gave Red Bull a one-two sweep in this year's Chinese GP.
"It was a very tough race, but it was extremely rewarding to get this result," Webber said. "It's obviously the best result in my career, and I hope it will be one step better in the future. It's an incredible result for Red Bull."
Button, who won the first two races this season, finished third, while Barrichello was fourth. Heikki Kovalainen from McLaren completed the top-five. Kovalainen did not complete one lap in Australia and Malaysia.
Defending world champion Lewis Hamilton overcame three separate spins to finish sixth. The McLaren driver started on the pole and won this race last year.
Timo Glock from Toyota, Sebastien Buemi, the rookie driver who replaced Vettel at Toro Rosso this year, Renault's Fernando Alonso and Kimi Raikkonen from Ferrari completed the top-10.
Button leads the championship standings with 21 points, compared to 15 for Barrichello and 10 each for Vettel and Glock.
"It was a difficult race, and every lap you thought you were going to throw the car off," Button said. "To finish the race is an achievement, and to come home on the podium is also great...It's great to get six points on the board."
Felipe Massa and Ferrari's early season woes continued when Massa's car lost power and stopped at the side of the track on lap 21. The Brazilian was running third at the time, but a reliability issue forced him out of the event with a 19th-place finish.
Both Massa and Raikkonen have yet to score a point this year, marking the first time Ferrari has been without a point in the first three races since 1981.
