New York, NY (My Sportsbook) - Cleveland Indians catcher Victor Martinez was named American League Player of the Week for the second time this season. Martinez, who just played in his first All-Star Game last Tuesday, continued his strong play with a league-best four home runs and eight RBI in the four games since the break, batting 7-for-14. The 25-year-old backstop had a career night on Friday, going 5-for-5 with three homers and seven RBI in Cleveland's 18-6 victory over Seattle. He went deep from both sides of the plate and became the first Indians catcher to hit three homers in a game. Martinez is currently hitting .300 with 16 homers and 71 RBI on the season. He shared the award with Minnesota's Joe Nathan for the week ending May 16. Other candidates for the honor were Alfonso Soriano and Mark Teixeira of the Texas Rangers as well as pitchers Mike Maroth of Detroit and Tampa Bay's Mark Hendrickson. |
