(My Sportsbook) - The Pittsburgh Penguins will try to take a two games to none lead in the Eastern Conference quarterfinals when they host the
Philadelphia Flyers tonight at Mellon Arena.
The fourth-seeded Penguins pounded visiting Philadelphia, 4-1, on Wednesday in Game 1 of the best-of-seven series. Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 26-of-27 shots to lead the Penguins to an easy win over their Atlantic Division rivals.
Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby each posted a goal and one assist for Pittsburgh. Malkin won the Art Ross Trophy with 113 points this year and Crosby finished third in the league behind Washington's Alex Ovechkin with 103 points.
Pittsburgh has won five of the last six playoff meetings against the Flyers dating back to a five-game series win over Philadelphia in last year's Eastern Conference finals. The Pens are trying to get back to the final stage of the playoffs after losing to Detroit in six games during the 2008 Stanley Cup Finals.
Including the regular season, Pittsburgh has now taken five of seven from the Flyers this year. In fact, the Battle of Pennsylvania has been owned by the Penguins in recent years with Pittsburgh taking seven of 10 and 15 of the last 22 regular-season meetings.
Tyler Kennedy and Mark Eaton also tallied for Pittsburgh, which won despite going just 1-for-9 on the power play.
Simon Gagne picked up the lone goal for the Flyers, who avoided being blanked in back-to-back playoff games after Fleury and the Pens closed out the '08 conference finals with a 6-0 rout last May 18.
Martin Biron allowed all four goals on 33 shots in defeat for the Flyers, who lost their first game of last year's postseason before ultimately defeating Washington in seven games. Philadelphia also lost the opener of its second- round series against Montreal, but rebounded to win in five games.
The Flyers will be without forward Daniel Carcillo for tonight's game after being hit with a one-one game suspension by the NHL for an incident late in Game 1. With seven seconds to play in the third period and Pittsburgh on its way to a 4-1 victory, Carcillo struck the Penguins' Maxime Talbot in the head directly off a face-off with the butt-end of his stick. Talbot wasn't hurt and no penalty was called.
Philadelphia head coach John Stevens was also fined $10,000 for his attempt to "send a message".
The Pens were 25-13-3 as the host team this season, while Philadelphia posted a 20-14-7 record as the guest.
Following tonight's test, the series will shift to Philadelphia for Games 3 and 4 with the Flyers hosting the next matchup on Sunday afternoon. The Flyers had a chance to get home-ice advantage for this series on the final day of the regular season, but lost in regulation to the New York Rangers.
