Flushing, NY (My Sportsbook) - Chase Headley notched the second four-hit game of his career and drove in three runs to power San Diego to a 6-5 win over the
New York Mets in the rubber match of a three-game series at Citi Field.
Headley, who finished 4-for-4, had a two-run single during a five-run third inning as the Padres won for the sixth time in seven games.
Jake Peavy (2-1) allowed six hits and three runs over five innings to get the win. The 2007 National League Cy Young Award winner had four walks and five strikeouts.
Heath Bell retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth inning for his fifth save in as many appearances this year.
Carlos Delgado slugged a three-run homer in the first inning for the Mets, who faltered in two of the three matchups of the opening series in their new ballpark. Ramon Castro's first hit of the season came in the eighth inning, a two-run homer, but the Mets lost for the third time in four games.
John Maine (0-1) was pounded for seven hits and six runs over five innings for the Mets. He had four strikeouts against three walks.
Peavy struggled in the first inning, as Jose Reyes legged out an infield hit and Daniel Murphy followed with a walk. David Wright struck out, and after both runners advanced on a balk, Delgado homered to center field.
Maine allowed the initial two hitters to reach safely in the third, as Henry Blanco walked and Everth Cabrera singled. The runners advanced on Peavy's sacrifice bunt, and Jody Gerut laced an RBI single to right. David Eckstein then singled in a run. Adrian Gonzalez drew a two-out intentional walk, and Headley made the Mets pay with a single up the middle for a 4-3 lead. Kevin Kouzmanoff added another RBI single.
The Mets had runners at second and third with two outs in the third and fourth, but couldn't score. Castro struck out to end the third, and Wright fanned to finish the fourth with a runner at third.
Headley doubled down the right-field line to drive in Gonzalez in the fifth and the Padres held a three-run lead until the eighth when New York cut into the margin against ex-Mets reliever Duaner Sanchez. Ryan Church bunted for a hit and Castro then launched a homer to left field. Pinch-hitter Gary Sheffield walked with one out, but Reyes grounded into an inning-ending double-play.
Bell retired Murphy on a ground ball and Wright on a fly out in the ninth before Delgado angrily went down looking at a called third strike to end the game, capping an 11-pitch at-bat.
