Nowitzki, Mavericks finalize playoff position with win over Rockets

Dallas, TX (My Sportsbook) - Dirk Nowitzki scored 30 points and pulled down 15 rebounds, and Dallas clinched the No. 6 seed in the Western Conference with a 95-84 win over the Houston Rockets.

Jason Kidd logged the 103rd triple-double of his career with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 12 assists for Dallas, which prevented Houston from winning the Southwest Division. Jason Terry added 23 points, including 14 in the pivotal fourth quarter, for the Mavericks (50-32), who will face San Antonio in the first round of the playoffs.

"We're going down to the riverwalk," said Terry. "A place we've been many times before. It's going to be an outstanding series, a big rival of ours and they're placing pretty good basketball. Tony Parker is not in the MVP talks, but he should be."

The Mavericks, who rallied from a 14-point deficit, have now won at least 50 games in each of the last nine seasons, joining San Antonio as the only two teams to enjoy as many consecutive 50-win seasons.

"Fifty wins is tremendous," said Terry. "Since I've joined this organization it hasn't been less than that and our fans really appreciated it tonight."

The Spurs won the Southwest Division thanks to a 105-98 overtime win over the New Orleans Hornets.

Yao Ming had 23 points and nine rebounds for the Rockets (53-29), who finished as the fifth seed and will play Portland in the first round. The Blazers gained home-court advantage for the series thanks to a blowout win over Denver Wednesday night.

The Rockets haven't won a playoff series since 1997, a span of six straight first-round exits. They were trying for their first division championship since the 1993-94 season, when the Rockets won the first of back-to-back NBA titles.

"The way you look at it you can't come in here and be disappointed with one game," said Houston forward Shane Battier. "We had so many opportunities during the year we could have won this thing. Two losses at Memphis, the loss to the Clippers, the loss to Washington at home, those are the games you look back at the end of the year and go'Man, why didn't we come and play.' If we had a couple of those we wouldn't have to worry about tonight."

Terry actually matched the entire Houston output in the fourth quarter.

"The 14 [points] in the fourth quarter pretty much summed it up," said Battier. "They turned up the pressure and that's what a good team does. They played very well and they're a tough team to beat at home, and we gave effort but didn't have the execution and focus that we needed to win this game tonight."

Dallas entered the final quarter facing a 70-65 deficit, and Houston was actually able to expand its lead to 76-72 following a pair of Carl Landry buckets.

Terry and Kidd then sparked Dallas, with each hitting a three-pointer. Landry's driving layup tied the game at 80 with four minutes left, but Terry came back with a bucket, banged in a three-pointer and hit another jumper for an 87-80 cushion with under four minutes left.

Josh Howard's running jumper made it 93-82 with less than two minutes remaining.

Dallas led 26-19 after the first quarter, but Houston responded with a big run at the end of the second. The 14-4 push gave the Rockets a 50-42 halftime edge.

Howard and Nowitzki, though, were dominant in the third, accounting for the team's first 17 points, as the Mavs closed what was a 61-47 deficit to 63-59. Houston was ahead, 70-65 moving to the fourth.
