Perez helps Mets gain first win at Citi Field

Flushing, NY (My Sportsbook) - Oliver Perez allowed only one run in six innings, and the New York Mets got their first victory in their new ballpark, a 7-2 triumph over the San Diego Padres on Jackie Robinson Day.

Perez (1-1) gave up three hits and two walks while striking out four for the Mets, who had lost their last two.

New York also commemorated the entrance to Citi Field as Jackie Robinson Rotunda. Robinson made his monumental major league debut for the Brooklyn Dodgers on April 15, 1947 at Ebbets Field, which is only a few miles from where the Mets' new home stands. The rotunda features a number of exhibits noting his accomplishments.

Carlos Delgado homered in a 2-for-3 effort with a walk, while Daniel Murphy and Carlos Beltran each had an RBI in the win, which evened the three-game set.

"We can definitely play better," said Delgado. "We can play better defense. I think even our offense is not firing on all cylinders. I think that's very encouraging."

Adrian Gonzalez homered for the Padres, who had won their previous five games. Scott Hairston and Luis Rodriguez each had two hits, while Kevin Correia (0-1) took the loss after surrendering two runs on five hits and two walks, with five strikeouts over five innings.

"We have to hit, like all clubs, with runners in scoring position," said Padres manager Bud Black. "We have to do all situational hitting along the way as well."

The Mets scored the first runs of the game in the fourth. Murphy and David Wright started the frame with back-to-back singles, and Delgado worked a walk to load the bases. Beltran grounded a single to right field to score one run, and Wright scored on Gary Sheffield's double play groundout.

The Padres got one back in the fifth. Rodriguez hit a one-out single, moved to second on a Correia sacrifice bunt and scored on Hairston's single to left.

New York extended its lead in the seventh. Sheffield and Brian Schneider both walked off Luke Gregerson, who was then taken out in favor of Edward Mujica. He allowed a bunt single to Luis Castillo to load the bases and threw a wild pitch against pinch hitter Ryan Church, scoring Sheffield.

Church struck out, and Jose Reyes was intentionally walked to reload the bases with one out. Murphy added a sacrifice fly to give the Mets a three-run lead, 4-1. Then, Castillo raced home on another Mujica wild pitch, and catcher Nick Hundley's throw got away from Mujica at home plate, allowing Reyes to score all the way from first base.

Delgado led off the bottom of the eighth with a homer to make it a six-run game, and Gonzalez began the ninth with a home run for San Diego off Sean Green to cap the scoring.

Game Notes

Correia is 0-3 lifetime against the Mets in eight appearances -- three starts...The Padres failed to win six straight games for the first time since winning seven in a row from September 14-20, 2007...San Diego turned three double plays in the contest.
