St. Petersburg, FL (My Sportsbook) - Derek Jeter went 2-for-4 and knocked in the game-winning run with a single in the ninth inning as the New York Yankees held on to edge the Tampa Bay Rays, 4-3, in the finale of a three-game series at Tropicana Field.

Robinson Cano had a two-run homer, while Johnny Damon finished 2-for-4 with a tying RBI double in the eighth inning for the Yankees, who took two of the three games in the set.

Yankees starter Andy Pettitte allowed three runs on six hits with four strikeouts and a walk over 7 1/3 innings. Brian Bruney (1-0) got win after pitching two-thirds of an inning and fanned two. Mariano Rivera registered his second save of the season.

"Other than two pitches, I threw every ball exactly where I wanted to I think," Pettitte said. "I hung a ball to Carlos Pena, hung a cutter and he hit it out and the first pitch to Kapler where I was trying to go away with a fast ball and I put it right down the middle and he hit it down the line for a double. Other than that I say I really didn't throw a ball exactly where I wanted to."

New York concluded its nine-game road trip to start the season and will open new Yankee Stadium on Thursday versus Cleveland. CC Sabathia gets the starting nod for the Yankees against his former team and will be opposed by reigning Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee.

Carlos Pena hit a solo homer, while B.J. Upton and Carl Crawford added back- to-back RBI doubles for the Rays.

Andy Sonnanstine, who also did not figure in the decision, went five innings, giving up two runs on four hits with three strikeouts and one walk. Troy Percival (0-1) was tagged with the loss after surrendering one run on two hits.

"Another close game. A lot of close games we played already," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "We're playing well. We gave up some runs late, that's no big deal. As long as they're healthly I know they're going to be fine."

With Tampa Bay clinging to a 3-2 lead after seven innings, Jeter led off the eighth with a double to center. The Rays then went to the bullpen and brought in J.P. Howell and Damon greeted the left-hander with a double down the right field line to tie the game. Mark Teixeira and Nick Swisher struck out before Jorge Posada was intentionally walked. Brian Shouse took the mound and got Cano to ground into a force play to end the inning.

The Rays went quietly in the home half and the Yankees grabbed the lead in the ninth. Shouse fanned Brett Gardner, but Percival then entered and gave up a double to Cody Ransom. After Jose Molina lined out to third, Jeter's RBI single to left put the visitors in front. Damon flied out to center for the third out.

In the bottom of the ninth, Rivera was brought on and retired the side in order to preserve the win. That included a pair of groundouts.

After a scoreless 2 1/2 innings, the Rays broke through for a pair in the bottom of the third. Gabe Kapler led off the frame with a double, but was thrown out while attempting to take third after Michel Hernandez was retired on a 5-3 grounder. Akinori Iwamura singled and came around to score when Upton laced a double to center. Crawford followed with a run-scoring two-base hit to make it a 2-0 game.

The Yankees evened things in the fourth. Swisher got things started with a base hit to right, and after Posada flied out, Cano launched a first-pitch changeup over the center field wall.

Pena's blast to right in the home half of the fourth put the Rays back in front.
