(My Sportsbook) - Having already put together a winning streak that was longer than any they had all of last season, the
Seattle Mariners vie to continue their early-season roll in tonight's second test of a three-game series with the
Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim from Safeco Field.
Seattle, a team which had an American League-worst 61-101 record in 2008 and finished 39 games behind the first-place Angels in the AL's West Division, recorded its fifth consecutive victory after edging Anaheim in extra innings on Tuesday. Franklin Gutierrez scored the winning run on a throwing error by Angels reliever Scot Shields in the bottom of the 10th as the Mariners won their home season opener by a 3-2 count.
After Gutierrez doubled to begin the bottom of the 10th, Seattle's Yuniesky Betancourt laid down a sacrifice bunt that Shields (0-1) grabbed and threw wildly to first to allow the deciding run to cross the plate.
Endy Chavez finished 2-for-4 with an RBI single to help the Mariners to their first five-game win streak since the club closed out the 2007 campaign with five victories in a row.
The Angels, who entered the set having taken two of three at home from Boston, got a solo home run from Torii Hunter and two hits apiece out of Bobby Abreu and Erick Aybar in a losing cause.
Both starting pitchers put fourth good efforts despite not factoring in the final outcome. Seattle's Carlos Silva worked seven innings and surrendered two runs on just four hits, while Anaheim's Shane Loux allowed a pair of runs over 5 1/3 frames in his season debut.
Tonight's matchup could feature another pitcher's duel, as both the Angels' Jered Weaver and the Mariners' Jarrod Washburn are coming off exceptional performances in their last starts.
Weaver delivered a much-needed gem for his team on Friday, as the right-hander limited the Red Sox to one unearned run and four hits through 6 2/3 stellar innings to lead the Angels to a 6-3 victory over Boston. The game was the first for Anaheim since rookie Nick Adenhart was tragically killed in an automobile accident this past Thursday.
Weaver, who struck out eight Boston hitters while issuing a pair of walks, will also be attempting to improve upon a 6-2 lifetime record against Seattle, although he's recorded a 5.07 earned run average in 11 starts versus tonight's opponent. He faced the Mariners four times last season and went 2-1 with a 5.79 ERA in those games.
Washburn, a one-time member of the Angels, fired eight shutout innings to help give the Mariners a 2-0 victory at Minnesota this past Wednesday. The veteran lefty surrendered just five hits and one walk while striking out four batters in a 96-pitch effort.
The 34-year-old broke into the majors with Anaheim in 1998 and pitched eight years for the Angels before signing a four-year free-agent contract with Seattle prior to the 2006 season.
Washburn has faced the Angels 10 times since making the move and owns a 4-5 record with a 4.31 ERA against his former club, although he lost all three of his starts versus Anaheim last season.
The Angels had won in 10 of their last 13 visits to Seattle prior to yesterday's defeat and went 7-3 at Safeco Field during 2008, while taking 14 of the 19 overall meetings between the teams last season.
